Let me begin by saying that computer program manuals can be confusing bricks of information at the best of time. For the most part all one has to do is make a cup of tea, sit back, relax and slowly make one's way through the mine-field of information. For me, this isn't a big deal - I like learning new computer programs and often prepare myself for long stints going through and covering all the topics to become a true master of these things. I should say at this point that I invested in Mastering Autodesk 3ds Max Design 2011, and Mastering AutoCAD 2011 & AutoCAD LT 2011 and found them both to be clearly written, informative and extremely useful for retrieving information even after my intensive period going from cover to cover was over.
That's the principle reason why I held out for an extra month to invest in this new Mastering book in the series. I have/ had a copy of Revit Architecture 2013, and therefore thought I would hold off for the corresponding book.
However, this is not like the previous versions I read, and the primary failure for me is the inconsistencies between the written descriptions, the illustrations/ figures, the provided example files and what you actually get on your screen. Like I said, I have experience with these books and am incredibly patient, and have had previous use of Revit in the workplace - but this book is flawed in my opinion.
Currently I'm on Chapter 3. I have done chapters 2 & 3 twice now and on the second time round I listed every inconsistency and problem I found to email directly to the authors, a total of two pages of problems in two chapters (and these only cover the working exercises/ examples). I'm really disappointed with this, and cannot imagine being able to finish the text at this point. In two chapters I have had to completely abandon two exercises simply because information described wasn't present. I can't imagine how nightmarish it will be later on when some of the concepts begin to get more complex.
I'm seriously considering changing to "Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013: No Experience Required" for what will hopefully be a more coherent & consistent run through to learn the program.
Thanks for reading.
This book is not intended as an introduction to Revit, it assumes a degree of working knowledge of the application. You could use it as a complete beginners guide, and you may have some success with it if used in that way. It will however be frustrating, as it goes into some detail on each approach - and for a beginner it would be easy to get bogged down as the previous reviewer appears to have done.
If you are a total beginner to Revit - I would recommend 'Revit Essentials 2013' which is the sister publication to this one. I worked through that book and it laid some pretty good foundations.
Where this book excels is that it takes the areas covered by the 'Essentials' title and digs deeper - way deeper in some cases. It also goes out of its way to provide greater context for how the use of Revit can be managed towards a more complete BIM approach.
So far, I have been very pleased with the 'Mastering Revit 2013' - and on the basis of the 1/4 already covered - I'd award it 5 stars. I'll update this review once I've completed the book.
