4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Essential for reading French as a second language on kindle, despite flaws. 15 de junio de 2010

The reviews already posted here are largely accurate -- the translations supplied by this dictionary are short and not as complete as you'd expect from a real French-English dictionary. However larger dictionaries typically cost more than this anyway, so I don't think this should surprise anyone. Also, many forms of words that are in the dictionary will not be recognized by the dictionary in the auto-lookup default dictionary mode (including irregular conjugations and words preceded by l' (eg. l'ombre, as one reviewer pointed out).

There's a lot of room for improvement, and as soon as another French-English dictionary is available that works as a default dictionary, I'd recommend switching, unless the index for this dictionary is improved to address these problems.

However, I'd like to clarify a few things --

First, stemming does work in most cases, and you can look up conjugated forms of most verbs without trouble. I was afraid before I purchased it that I'd only be able to look up singular nouns, infinitive verbs, and masculine adjectives, which isn't the case. This means that most of the time, you'll be able to look up words instantly. This is a *huge* improvement from looking things up in a separate dictionary, which is great for the price. It is of course annoying when a word won't auto lookup, but then you could look it up manually in the dictionary.

My recommendation is this, at least until a better french-english default dictionary is available:

Buy this dictionary. It will *dramatically* improve your french reading experience on the Kindle. It has flaws, but they're not worth worrying about at the price it's at.

If you're an academic or an expert, you'll probably find it annoying sometimes, but still helpful. Buy a better dictionary. But I'd probably also recommend buying this one, if only for the convenience of the auto-lookup feature.

2.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas It works as a default dictionary 22 de octubre de 2009

It was easy to make this dictionary the default dictionary on my Kindle 1 (go to "Settings"). But it is a fairly primitive dictionary. For instance, I looked up the words in this line, "l'on effarouche son orgueil; vous le". The dictionary returned entries for "son", orgueil", "vous" and "le", but not for the word I wanted to know, "effarouche." That is because the first person singular form of the word is not in the dictionary. The infinitive, "effaroucher", is in the dictionary, however, and one can find it by doing a global search on the computer for "effaroucher". This is time consuming.

I look forward to a better dictionary (I would pay a lot for a good one), but I will use this one in the mean time.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Useful dictionary for French beginner 23 de septiembre de 2014

I don't normally write reviews but I almost didn't purchase this due to some of the negative reviews. Given what I was looking for, this couldn't be much better so I'm writing this in case anyone else is in a similar situation to me.

I studied French for a short time as an adult and dip in and out occasionally. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle app on other devices and until recently hadn't thought about the possibilities of using them for language study. One of the things I hated when younger and studying Russian was the constant need to look up words in a dictionary but e-readers make looking up words so easy that I now find myself looking up more English words when reading, for a variety of reasons (not to miss a possibly subtle point by a great author, to see the etymology of a word, etc.).

I'm clearly at a beginner level in French but because the negative reviews seemed to focus on what this dictionary is lacking, I was surprised by what it contains. I've only been using it for a short while but every word I've searched for has been found. And as even the negative reviews have mentioned, if a word is not found using the integrated look up - the reason I and probably most others purchased it - words can still be found by manually searching.

The dictionary also contains additional useful materials that are often linked to the content. For example, when looking up a verb, there is usually/often a link labeled "Conjugation x" where x is some number. Following the link shows the conjugation for that or a similar verb for a variety of tenses. This can be a bit slow on the Paperwhite (mine is a first generation) but only because I'm spoiled by my modern devices; it's many times faster than using a physical dictionary ever was. Note: the links only seem to be available after selecting "Full Definition" or its equivalent on the Paperwhite so getting to that information requires additional touches.

I'm sure there is plenty to be desired in this and everyone's needs are different but for less than $7, I'm sorry I wasted a second of my life hesitating purchasing this.
4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Not robust, but a very good dictionary for learners 21 de noviembre de 2015

I have this dictionary both in paperback and Kindle versions. The Kindle version is identical to the French-English side of the paperback with some minor flaws. (1) The "nasalized a" is an upside down a with the tilde over the top, which is non-standard and not consistent with the paperback. (2) I have found a few other IPA transcriptions which are not in agreement with other dictionaries. (I did not keep track of these differences.) (3) It does not work for me with my Kindle 1, despite what other reviewers say. I spent about 45 minutes in an online chat with the Amazon support team (2 different people) who finally concluded that this dictionary only works with the Kindle 2. Maybe someday, when I can get a Kindle 2 at a bargain price, I will find out.

Minor flaws aside, I do use this dictionary on "My Kindle for PC" and I do like it. (By the way, don't use this on the Kindle Cloud reader. It takes forever to look up a word.) I bought the paperback version first (not on Amazon) because I wanted a dictionary where the French-English side was written for English speakers and not for French speakers. This means that the glosses and explanations on the French-English side are in English - NOT French. True, the M-W dictionary does provide synonyms is French, but that is it. Carefully compare Larousse, Oxford, Collins and other dictionaries and look at those words in parentheses before a translation and you will see that they are in French, which is great for French speakers who are looking up a French word to find the best English translation, but does me no good as a learner.

BOTTOM LINE: While this dictionary is not robust, I think that it is a very good dictionary for English speakers, especially learners.

I was really looking forward to getting the Merriam-Webster's French-English Translation Dictionary. I had purchased several books in the original French for my Kindle Fire so this was going to be a definite bonus in helping me with my comprehension. I already have a hardcopy French-English dictionary so the only reason I bought this was for the ease of look-up. I actually had received an email from Amazon telling me to purchase this. Then surprise surprise. I get it, can't get it set as default and then while researching, I find that a previous reviewer says that it DOESN'T work on Kindle Fires. Why isn't that in the product description and if Amazon knew that , why send it to me? The dictionary itself is fine, just not for the Kindle. Very disappointed.
