Reseña del editor

Christians sometimes approach the Old Testament with a mixture of awe and bewilderment, knowing that it contains pearls of wisdom, but unsure how to dive for them ... especially when it comes to the Prophets. In The Message of the Prophets, author J. Daniel Hays offers a scholarly, yet readable and student-friendly survey of the Old Testament prophetic literature that presents the message of each prophet in its historical and its biblical context and then tracks that message through the New Testament to challenge readers with what it means for them today. Hays focuses on synthesizing the message of the prophets, which enables students to grasp the major contours of the prophetic books clearly and concisely. Hundreds of colorful pictures help to illustrate the historical and cultural background of the prophets. After identifying what the message meant for ancient Israel, Hays helps the readers to move toward theological application today, helping readers to gain a better understanding of God and the relationship between God and his people. The Message of the Prophets is essential for professors, students, and others seeking to understand the role that the OT prophets play in the Christian faith.

Hays provides the most objective look at the prophets I am aware of. He presents different views and recognizes the pros and cons. He is faithful to interpret Scripture with Scripture, and recognize the authority of the Bible. They layout is attractive, and the content is thorough, but not dry. Hays provides excellent background and historical detail to put the Prophetic books in context.

This has got to be one of the only textbooks I've read that doesn't read like a textbook! It's down to earth, practical reading for someone wanting to gain a deeper knowledge of the Prophets of the OT!

Hays' work is clearly intended to serve as a textbook for students in Old Testament survey courses and its organization and layout further that intent. Overall, the text is well written and approachable and the author includes many interesting supplementary articles throughout the book. Unfortunately, Hays' has inexplicably chosen to ignore basic academic standards with respect to providing references for his work. There are no end notes, almost no footnotes, and the only hint of a bibliography is the "suggested reading" section at the end of each chapter. Absent any real documentation one is forced to remain somewhat skeptical about Hays' assertions and conclusions.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Hay's book is a great survey of the OT prophets 11 de marzo de 2015

Hay's book is a great survey of the OT prophets. I had to read it for an OT Survey class and write a 7-page review of the book for class. It is well organized and systemically laid out. Each chapter gives background information regarding the historical aspect of the book and the prophet's life and circumstances; a summary of the message; and where indicated, a discussion of different theological viewpoints, issues, and problems. Especially helpful is the first division of the book, where the author discusses how to read the prophets; literary considerations; and the role of the prophets. Lots of colorful sidebars and discussions about people, places, and geography pertaining to the era of the prophets. Pleasant reading as well! I enjoyed this book as a student new to many of the ideas in this book!
