Reseña del editor
'Petit's words go right to the heart of Chekhov's technique ... Anyone looking for a key to understanding more about Michael Chekhov's technique will devour it.' – Jessica Cerullo, Michael Chekhov Association, NYC
The Michael Chekhov technique is today seen as one of the most influential and inspiring methods of actor training in existence. In The Michael Chekhov Handbook, Lenard Petit draws on twenty years of teaching experience to unlock and illuminate this often complex technique.
Petit uses four sections to guide those studying, working with or encountering Chekhov's approach for the first time:
- the aims of the technique – outlining the real aims of the actor
- the principles – acting with energy, imagination and creative power
- the tools – the actor’s use of the body and sensation
- the application – bringing the technique into practice
The Michael Chekhov Handbook’s explanations and exercises will provide readers with the essential tools they need to put the rewarding principles of this technique into use.
Lenard Petit is the Artistic Director of The Michael Chekhov Acting Studio in New York City. He teaches Chekhov Technique in the MFA and BFA Acting programs at Rutgers University. He was a contributor and co-creator of the DVD, Master Classes in The Michael Chekhov Technique, published by Routledge.

Chekhov practiced Eurythmy for 30 years and was influenced by the work of R. Steiner -The founder of Anthroposophical Society. This influence, which is of an esoteric level, meaning that his spiritual path was related to this group, is clearly expressed in his work (Life body - Atmosphere and so on). Lenard overlooked this aspect and by doing so he failed to grasp Chekhov's technique as a whole. He interpreted it,and only partially, and the outcome of that interpretation is this book.
I would recommend two works by Rudolf Steiner, "Speech and Drama" and "Eurythmy", as strong complements to Chekhov's texts. If not as his foundation.
Lenard Petit book, however takes advantage of the fact that things that Cheknov knew about Energy and spirituality and which we accept now, was not generally accepted in his day and so was not overtly expressed in his book.
Petit can and does emphasis energy, spirituality and movement and the psychological gesture.
I think the skills in the book and of value and deserving of an audience above budding actors, we all play different roles during our lives, and if we can play them with more energy so much the better. In particular the book is of value to:
NLPers to help get into state and new roles
Toltecs (Castaneda) to break their existing role and move into new roles
Anybody wanting to increase the number of their personae
Bit expensive for a small paperback but worth it.
