Reseña del editor
Gemma Ridley’s first encounter with Squire Kenrik proves nothing short of alarming. So much so, she considers fleeing back to the city, despite the fact only poverty and scandal await her there. Could those challenges be worse than staying as governess on a haunted estate and working for a dangerously handsome eccentric? Little does Gemma realize what dark secrets and wondrous enchantments will transform her life at Rook Hall. Squire Kenrik is more than he seems—more than any man she has known. He may be the source of her undoing, or he may hold the key to her deepest desires. Only time and the guidance of her heart will tell.

But while there are secrets enough for any gothic romance at Rook Hall, Squire Allan Kenrick is hardly a brooding Rochester. He's kind, unconcerned with the scandal of her father, and a good father to his children. The only problems are his mysterious disappearances for days at a time and the ragged condition he comes back in. In trying to protect his late wife and his children, Allan has made a deal with a fae lord that requires him to serve at the lord's whim. But even as Gemma tries to unravel Allan's secrets, there's another, malevolent force at work.
I really enjoyed the chemistry between Allan and Gemma, and I loved the relationship she had with the children, who were delightful characters in and of themselves, especially Edwina. Both Gemma and Allan are basically kind, decent people who respect and are good to each other throughout the book. The external plot provides the conflict; the romance proceeds with very little in the way of internal conflict--aside from a minor bump at the beginning, they like each other from the start and only like each other more the more they know.
This was a fun alt-gothic romance, and I look forward to trying more of Diana Green's backlist.
This is a charming romance in an interesting world with likeable characters. I look forward to the next book. The first chapter of book two included at the end of this book sounds intriguing.
It is very difficult to write such a dark story while maintaining a sense of hopefulness.
Gemma Ridley has run out of options and takes an assignment away from everything familiar.
She finds herself where the veil is thin. The doorway between humans and evil fey kingdoms may as well be the passage between life and death.
Sparks fly and continue to heat up between governess Gemma and employer Allan which causes everyone to gossip and complain. With emotions raw, tensions rise further when his condescending mother pays a visit. You can cut the tension with a magical dagger!
The main themes are revenge and obligation.
What can I say about weak and whiney Lord Deven? Talk about abandonment issues and arrested development.
The human side of the battle culminated in a bittersweet ending.
A quick read full of magic and turmoil.
I was given a copy of this book to review.
This book is a perfect blend of historical and fantasy romance, a truly appealing and compelling read. A smart and sweet heroine, a charming and mysterious hero, an intriguing storyline and a flowing style make it a really compelling story.
Following a family scandal, Gemma Ridley is forced to leave her teaching job. She is used as a children's nurse at a country estate but her new employer Kenrick is a very mysterious man and seems to have magical powers. Gemma's educated and rational mind refuses to believe in magic even when she starts to make bad nightmares and has witnessed some strange events. Luckily the children are wonderful and she immediately becomes attached to them. A very bad magician is willing to do anything to get what he wants, has already killed Kenrick's wife and cursed his children .....
Gemma is a very cultured woman, intelligent, independent. She's very angry at losing her prestigious job because of her father. But she is not willing to surrender. Kenrick is a great hero, an honest person who loves his children. According to him, Gemma is the woman of his life because he loves his kids and he is willing to fight against his family and society to be with her.
Rites magical, enchanted forests, gothic atmosphere, a sweet love story, interesting characters: this novel is really an enjoyable read.
I recommend it to those who love historical novels and for those who love fantasy.
