If you are looking for a nice stiff trail shoe that can take a beating on most unprepared trails, I would recommend the Mt Masochist. Rock plate gives plenty of foot protection on rocks and roots, especially in the later stages of ultra distances. Shoe performs well on muddy, wet conditions and drains quickly. If you are used to a soft flexible road shoe, expect to take a little extra time breaking these in. Happy Trail Running!

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Good but not much support 8 de octubre de 2011

I'm on my second pair of Masochists and while they are fine for everyday trail running, I was just reminded why I don't like them for ultra distance runs. If you are looking for a shoe with good support, these don't hack it for the long haul. Otherwise, they drain exceptionally well, are light (but not minimalist by any means), and the soles seem to last a while. I may seriously see about an orthotic to add a bit of support, as these are otherwise a bargin-priced winner of a shoe. But for a shoe being advertised as offering stability for overpronators...meh...not so much.

This is an awesome shoe. I tear up shoes, especially in the inner heel and at the point where the bone by the little toe hits the side. Why is it so hard to figure out that if you out a seam right in the middle of the heel cup, tat people might tear it up at the seam??? Stupid. I've sent back numerous Garmont shoes, Patagonia, NorthFace, etc all for the same defect in the heel design. The old Hard Rocks got me turned onto Montrail, but they diacontinued those, then Columbia bought Montrail, and I was concerned. I tried the Montrail AT Plus, bad shoe, now discontinued, but I tore up the heel inside and punched through the side of the toe box. Montrail replaced 4 pair of te AT Plus shoes that lasted less than 3 months with less than 200 miles of trail use, then asked me to try these. So I tried the Montrail Mountain Masochists, and the Bad Rocks at the same time to compare. The Bad Rocks are very comfortable, but I punched through the toe box on one side, and caught the other side on a rock on a climb and it promptly wore through. During the same time, the Mountain Masochists haven't gotten a mark. And a seamless heel cup!! Brilliant.... Excellent tread wear, no wear in the inner heel, and no tear throughs. I can finally say I've found a show I can recommend and out-performs most of the competition, as I've tried and worn out all of those and have returned pair after pair. As long as they don't discontinue the Mountain Masochists, I'll buy pair after pair. Have not tried the MM II's, but the Bad Rocks had the same sole type, they were comfortable, but Not as stable as the original sole that is on these Mountain Masochist 1's. If they discontinue these, I'll have to go buy 10 pair and stack them in the closet. When they discontinued the Hard Rocks I only bought 3 pair to ferret away, won't make that mistake again.

These shoes are excellent. Very comfortable. Great support. I am a size 9, the 9 fits true. Great for hiking, trail running or walking in the city on a rainy day.
