This is a very entertaining movie with excellent performances all round, especially from Depp, who gives a brilliant comic performance, for which he deserves an Oscar. It's a master class in comedy.
After watching this movie on Prime, I am amazed that it did not do well in the US box office. Mortdecai was a delicious surprise!
It is an enjoyably campy, and silly comedy that was funny throughout. If you watch this movie you will forget the real world for a couple of hours or so. . .
I think the movie suffered a bit of problems in pacing in the first 20 minutes or so –it dragged on a bit from about 15 minutes through 25 minutes more or less. (I fear that the movie was not edited crisply so that portion –I almost turned it off).
Yet, suddenly, perhaps at 30 minutes it seemed to catch its wind; and from then on it was simply funny and entertaining.
Johnny Depp is so fully in character that one doesn’t think of him as Johnny Depp. Gwyneth Paltrow starts out rather muted, but becomes quite commanding –and delightful-- in the story. Paul Bettany and Ewan McGregor are both very enjoyable as they play opposite foils to Johnny Depp in a perfect way! The characters, as silly as they are, are presented nicely and with sufficient depth to be quite credible.
Anyway, it is a very entertaining movie –if you like funny, chase-theme movies, and want to forget the world for a bit, turn it on, grab a glass of scotch and enjoy a well filmed, nicely paced (aside from a bit at the start) movie. . .
There's little doubt the entire film is a throwback to the tongue in cheek madcap, whimsical era of British comedies of that time.
Is it as good, kinda and kinda missed at the attempt as it is too much a satire of a satirical genre.
I don't think the plot was as strong or funny as the A list actors that are in this would have agreed it should be, to do it.
This wasn't a terrific career move for anyone, or it was a brilliant one if letting hot air out of your Hollywood screen image is your goal.
Depp tends to always do some small pictures to offset his image as a superstar, however it's usually for Tim Burton, this is not a Tim Burton film.
I will add he was fun to watch in this and he played against his stereotype he does have one though it's eclectic, to say the least.
It's worth seeing, if your in the mood for a light crime movie, without real violence. It has some silly and laughable moments and the main Character, Morticai, is likable as a self centered arrogant art Dealer. Who's always running a scam.
The highlights for me were his scenes with his wife in the film Gweneth Paltrow and the much to do about nothing mustache he's nursing to maturity. There are some very funny moments surrounding this bizarre subplot.
Paltrow was perfect as his disgusted with him and the mustache wife.
On the other hand actor Ewan mcgregor was wasted in his part, he is a very talented actor and can command an entire picture by himself as he did in "Moulin Rouge" but little was given to him to work with here, except to just be eye candy, to his fans.
I will sum up my review this way, if the premise interests you and if your a Terry Thomas fan, which would mean your an older person in your 50's at least, then a film like this is rare, and it's safe to say, nothing like this will come around again for a long time, especially with a cast like this.
Younger people will not get it, only a few will even like it at all, because it's not full of action, and it's not really obvious that it's a comedy, it's totally Character driven, and a retro remake of a genre that's all but gone today.
It's cartoon like in it's premise and delivery, but kind of a guilty pleasure for those of us that miss films like this.
Bottomline if you understand my references to genre and English films with Terry Thomas and you find that a treat, see this, although not as good as those done back in the day, it's a brand new adventure in a style of a bygone era of film making.
Depp is very good and he is obviously a fan of the genre or he wouldn't have dared risk his reputation to be in this.
I really liked it, after I knew what genre it was going to be styled after.
After reading this, you will too, knowing going in to this film what to expect, will make all the difference in the world and therefore your expectations will be right on.
It's a sweet film and without comparing it to anything but the genre its derived from, it's quite fun and it will make you nostalgic for some actual Terry Thomas films such as "Those Daring Young Men in a Their Flying Machines" or "It's A Mad Mad Mad World" If I'm wrong about Thomas being in either of those films the reference is still correct as both were Terry Thomas style films that he would definitely have been cast without even reading for them, as part of an essemble cast.
I believe you will be entertained enough, to compensate you for 2 hours of your precious time spent, though you might feel.. if only...
I wanted to give this 31/2 stars not 4 but I definitely think it's deserving of more than 3 for effort alone. You can't give stars in halfs only in whole numbers. So I went up to 4 rather then down to 3.
