4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Hardly your typical Keane album... 19 de octubre de 2010

First the bad news: if you were looking forward to Mt. Desolation (both this album and the group) as an alternative rock side project by the members of the English group Keane, prepare for a letdown. Largely abandoning their signature piano rock and electric guitar sounds, Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin have provided us a very memorable, if at times mellow, travelogue of a journey through an inner desolation and wilderness.

This, of course leads to the good news. I consider this album a surprising musical breakthrough for both the Rice-Oxley and Quin, and the members of The Killers, Noah & the Whale and Mumford & Sons who join them. Regardless of whether this album is what you first expect (there are a pair of more alternative rock tracks in "Bitter Pill" and "Pushed Around"), listen to the previews and decide if you too are ready to broaden your musical horizons with Mt. Desolation.

All in all a pretty good album. I can't put a finger on a genre if any but it doesn't fit into the alternative rock category it was placed in. I'd say more folk / country than rock. They are unique although if i had to describe the sound, it has a mix of The Killers meets Billy Joel. All the tracks are very radio friendly with nothing that would seem to appear as filler tracks. The mood reflects the extremes of emotions from leaving a beloved place, seeing a daughter grow up and being married or how someone deals with dead and dying, reminiscing about love lost. The tracks that stand out most to me are:

- "Departure" which starts like a ennio morricone western but then starts turning folksy, very catchy.
- "Bridal Gown" song about a father daughter relationship, storylike, sad.
- "Another Night On my Side" Reflections with a wife/lover
- "Midnight Ghost" soulful, more of a gospel twist
- "My, my, my" song about a father's death and reflections of their relationship
- "Coming Home" song about dying and making peace with surroundings, enjoying simple things in life.
- "Halo of Fireflies" yeah, lake made of whiskey...daydreaming

Great stuff, 4/5 stars.
5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Offshoot better than the original? 8 de febrero de 2011

So this record surprised me in a huge way. I bought it after a brief sampling, hoping that it'd sound similar to the older Keane (as opposed to the last record that represented a rotten detour for them in my opinion). And after a few listens I am convinced this is the better fit for these guys. My wife, who is hard to please musically, totally loves it and has no idea who Keane is/was. I hope that whatever course these guys follow w/ this offshoot band stays in the vein of this record, cuz it is an excellent collection of songs that almost makes Keane seem irrelevant. Whether or not Keane folds up shop, we'll be very lucky if Mt. Desolation provide us w/ more of this quality material, b/c this is a highly recommended record.
4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Good record. Pretty mellow but songs are very good. 15 de febrero de 2011

This record really is pretty good. Most of the songs are sung by Jesse Quinn or Tim Rice-Oxley of Keane. Good lyrics and songs you actually remember. Unlike the last two attempts from Keane. It is kind of weird to know JQ and TRO are singing the songs in this band instead of Tom Chaplin. But, their voices work and the more times I listen to it the more I like it. It is a little gem that has flown under the radar. Some side project from the boys when you think about the people they had help make this record. And, they came up with this idea sitting in a pub having a few drinks. Let's hope Keane go back to their roots and comes up with a quality record like this one.
