4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas One really great song, other fun ones, a VERY short “score” and 5 “demos”. But don’t expect a LOT from the “celebrities”. 18 de marzo de 2014

I’m really enjoying this CD from the newest Muppets film. . The music is fun and the styles are all over the place.

Here are a few facts you might want to know:
Instead of mixing in the “orchestral score” by Christophe Beck (responsible for “Frozen”’s ST, the CD mixes the 12 new songs (most, not all were written by Brett McKenzie) with three “covers” recorded separately, including Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” and the Allan Toussaint composition (Lee Dorsey hit) “Working In A Coal Mine”, with short pieces of dialog. This is followed by the “Muppets Most Wanted Score Suite which runs just over three minutes (alert to “score collectors”.) My favorite track is the first “vocal” track on the album, - “We’re Doing A Sequel”. It’s catchy and will keep coming back to you a day or two after hearing it.

As for the “special appearances” by some celebrities, only Tina Fey gets a full song and Ricky Gervais gets half of one. Tony Bennett gets – ready? – THREE words in the only song he is in and Lady Gaga (in the same song) gets two more words than Tony! Josh Grobman shows up in two other songs with two lines each time. And Celine Dion gets to duet with Miss Piggy (really!) but only on the chorus to their duet. So don’t get this for those appearances.
I really like the “bonus tracks”. All are performed by McKenzie, but they are fully fleshed out with other singers on the four “demos”. What’s nice in the demos is that you can – usually – hear the clever lyrics than in the fully illustrated versions. The 5th “bonus” is an “outtake” – “What You Want”.

The CD includes a 24-page booklet that includes the lyrics to all the NEW songs. This is really helpful since you will probably miss some of the great puns in McKenzie’s lyrics. I will say, however, that the idea of printing some of this info in bright GREEN type (yes, I know Kermit is green) will only make you reach for a magnifying glass to read those words.

There is literally something for everyone in this 51-minute CD.

There’s some fun humor here and if you liked the previous Muppet soundtracks you’ll like this. The film hits theaters next Friday (March 21, 2014) and I was hoping for a press preview here in Philly but none were scheduled in the city so I can’t tell you much about that or how the songs fit into the plot. In the official press release to the Soundtrack McKenzie states that "the songs are all plot specific" so they might make more sense after you see the film.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas The Muppets Again! 21 de marzo de 2014

Not only was THE MUPPETS a great movie, but it had one of the better Muppet soundtracks ever. For instance, it won an Oscar for “Best Original Song” with “Man or Muppet.” I was hoping that the MUPPETS MOST WANTED SOUNDTRACK would be almost as rewarding.

Like THE MUPPETS SOUNDTRACK, the MUPPETS MOST WANTED SOUNDTRACK has several different styles of music. There are some original songs and there are also some pop songs that feature a Muppet twist. Most of the new original songs were either written or produced by Brett McKenzie. Of these, there are two that stand out: “We’re Doing a Sequel” and “Something So Right.” I also really enjoyed “The Interrogation Song” that features Same Eagle and Ty Burrell’s character questioning the Muppets. Of the cover songs, the Muppet version of Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” is my favorite. The only instrumental on the album is track #20 which is the “Muppets Most Wanted Score Suite” which was written by Chrisophe Beck (who is a musical superstar now thanks to FROZEN, which he wrote the music for).

If you read the back of the cd, it lists several celebrities who sing on different songs. That’s partially true, but some of the celebrity appearances are barely there. Tony Bennett sings three words and Lady Gaga sings five on “We’re Doing a Sequel”. Ricky Gervais has a duet with Constantine, Tiny Fey sings most of “The Big House” with Josh Groban filling in for two lines on back-up (Groban sings again on “Together Again”). Ty Burrell has his duet with Sam Eagle and Celine Dion gets a duet with Miss Piggy on “Something So Right.” Finally, Jemaine Clement has a featured spot on “Working in the Coal Mine.” In addition to all of this, there are five bonus tracks which are mostly demo versions from McKenzie of songs featured on the album.

The “liner notes” include a 24-booklet that includes all the lyrics to the new original songs on the album. There are not lyrics for the cover songs. I like the booklet, but I wish there was an actual note of some sort from McKenzie or even something from a few of the Muppets themselves.

Overall, although THE MUPPETS MOST WANTED isn’t quite as good as THE MUPPETS SOUNDTRACK, it’s still a fun and entertaining soundtrack with some great original tunes and a few Muppet versions of pop hits. It’s music Muppet fans are sure to enjoy.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Better than the songs in the movie 26 de julio de 2014

My son and I saw the movie, enjoyed the music, and I got this for him since I always get him the soundtrack from the animated movies he likes. So we learned the songs by heart from listening to this, then the next time we watched the movie, we realized the movie doesn't have the full lyrics for all the songs. And parts of what they skip (i.e. in "We're doing a Sequel", one line not in the movie was, "How hard can it be? We can't do any worse than the Godfather 3.") can be pretty funny lines. Another one with some good missing parts was the Interrogation song. It's noticeably longer in the soundtrack than in the movie.

So if you liked the music, the album is actually better since a few of the songs are actually longer with more verses.

The sound quality is great, which is important when you have a 10 year old who wants to listen to it over and over while driving everywhere, including a 2 1/2 hour drive to go up north.

The booklet is well done inside as well, full lyrics for the songs, and some great quality photos to go along with the songs.

All told, a great purchase if you or your kids are a fan of the songs.

I admit this wasn’t the best Muppets movie I’ve seen and it didn’t do to well at the box office, but it is, as all their movie, just so much fun. Some of the jokes are a little outdated, but if you are a fan, you will enjoy this movie a lot. Of course, Kids will really like this movie too. The Muppets are such an institution, it’s hard for them to go wrong. Of course there are a million cameos. There are also some gut wrenching laugh out loud jokes in it. I hope the low box office draw doesn’t stop them making the movies. Tina Fay, as the Russian Security Guard and Ty Burrell as the Interpol French Detective really steal the show in every scene they are in. Those two actually deliver some of the best jokes. I like how they make fun of how serious Europeans are about their vacation time.
3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas What's with Disney and soundtracks? 5 de mayo de 2014

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the songs on this album. However, Disney marketing strategy towards releasing soundtracks is as usual quite annoying. This disc contains the songs and a very short score suite. Which means that: a) I have to buy the score separately (why not make everything on the same album?) b) when shuffling this album I have to skip the score suite if I'm in the mood to only listen to songs. If you don't give me all the score, why put the suite among the songs? And why not just release a proper soundtrack with songs, scores and, preferably, bonuses, as it was for Frozen? You did a good job with that one Disney, why can't it happen all the time?
