"Nate and Adel and Other Stories" is the first in a series of four linked story collections centering on the life of Adel Miller, a young woman suffering from schizophrenia in Brooklyn of the mid-1950's. Her life is centered around the Brooklyn Dodgers -- whose games she listens to on the radio with her Dad, Nate -- and her hallucinations of the voice of Jackie Robinson speaking to her of love and telling her who will win that day. Fate plays Adel a cruel trick when the Dodgers announce they are leaving Brooklyn.
“Nate & Adel” by Bruce J. Berger is especially touching. Nate’s sense of loyalty to his daughter is so sweet and genuine, but wonderfully unique.” Literary Lollipop. 9/3/10
The other stories in this first collection take Adel's life and tribulations forward and also look back at the brutality of war and racism, as experienced by Norm Williams, an African American, during World Wars I and II.
