This fantastic release by VCI entertainment digs deep into the creation of a classic via its satisfying array of bonus features. But first things first, the transfer is outstanding, capturing the authentic look of film (for you blu-ray geeks, this is one to be purchased without hesitation). With commentary and multiple featurettes, we learn a great deal about the origins of the story and production process behind one of the most frightening made-for-TV features of all time. Ultimately, what makes the movie so powerful is its script - the writer, J.D. Feigelson, was being mentored at the time by none other than Ray Bradbury, who exerted influence and guidance during the writing process. The final draft was a story that went against the grain of contemporary horrors, in favor of an older form of storytelling, one that featured a mystery to be resolved, justice to be done, and a supernatural question that lingers to the end. Kudos to VCI for this well-rounded complement of features - this is as satisfying as any Criterion Collection release yet at a reasonable price. Keep up the great work, VCI.

This movie is seriously one of the most underrated and under appreciated horror films of all time. Honestly, I like this movie more than any of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" films, more than any of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" films, and more than any of the "Candyman" films. The atmosphere is perfect. The acting is stellar. The story and dialogue are brilliantly written. Emphasis is placed on mood, suspense, and character development. The deaths are left to the imagination, making the experience of watching the film far more terrifying. In a way, the film's obscurity is fortunate, since if it were better known it likely would have spawned a number of inferior sequels or remakes. A great watch for the Halloween season, or for any time you're in the mood for a scary movie.

Horror film directors should see this film and take notes on how it's done. Today people seem to think that the more gore and blood you have the more frightening your horror film is, no, blood and gore just makes the kills more violent, believable, and sometimes there is so much gore that it's used just to shock you. Let's get on with the show shall we.

The Story: Bubba an intellectually disabled man, is friends with a young girl named Marylee. One day Marylee is attacked and mauled to death. 4 not so intelligent men believe that Bubba killed Marylee. After a chase Bubba is shot to death while hiding in a scarecrow. Now in court the 4 men lie and say that Bubba attacked them with a pitchfork which is a lie. One of the 4 men also kill Bubba's mother. Each man who has committed the deed begin to die off. Who is killing them off? Is it Marylee, Bubba's mother, or the scarecrow? Well, watch the film and find out.

The Good: Very suspenseful, atmospheric, well acted, well written, well filmed, everything about it is good.

The Bad: This film is underrated.

Fun Facts: Larry Drake plays Bubba, he would go on to play Dr.Giggles and Durrant in the first 2 Darkman films. Dark Night of the Scarecrow started the killer scarecrow sub genre.

Creepy Moments: The film over all has a creepy tone, especially in the end scene. When Marylee says hello to the scarecrow (possessed by Bubba you could say), the scarecrow sort of turns it's head and it's very inhuman something that adds to the effect, it's a quick head turn and inside the mouth hole and eye holes of the scarecrow it's just pitch black. The scene is also heart warming as the scarecrow gives Marylee a flower.

The film is very emotional and does have an affect on the viewer. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a treat to watch especially during the Halloween season which it aired on TV in 1981 on October 24th.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a very solid film and so I give it 5/5 stars.

Turn off the lights, bolt your doors and lock those windows, kiddies! Settle back for a classic chiller! Wrongfully accused and executed for the brutal attack on a young girl, Bubba Ritter's fate is decided by a four-man vigilante team. After the courts are forced to release them due to lack of credible evidence presented during trial, it seems as though they have escaped justice ... but, someone knows the truth, and, with the evening darkness as an ally, is stalking them, one by one! The only clue to the possible identity of their unseen killer lies in the strange calling card left for each of them as an ominous warning : a lifeless scarecrow!
A clever mystery combined with the suspense of a creepy ghost story, 'Dark Night of the Scarecrow' delivers just enough goosebumps to give the viewer second thoughts about those silent, straw sentinels of the cornfields! One of my favorite 'made-for-television' horror movies! I just had to have this one on Blu Ray!!! Thanks so much for a great addition to my film library!!!

Still one of the best made for TV horror movies I have ever seen. One of the biggest mistakes made in some of the modern horror films is in revealing too much too soon. This movie keeps enough unseen to really play at your fears and proves that a good ghost story doesn't need all that blood and gore to make it work. The music and lighting is what sets the mood, and the real evil at work in this film is not embodied by a winged devil, but, rather, by the vindictive actions of the small town mail man.
