4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas High-speed, ultra-melodic Swedish power metal 21 de noviembre de 2014
Por Justin G. - Publicado en Amazon.com
Formato: CD de audio
2010’s Night is Young is the debut album from Swedish power metal band Royal Jester, which features a pair of former ReinXeed members. I actually grabbed this disc from a clearance box by mistake, thinking it was the band Morbid Jester, but was pleasantly surprised by how good this is.

Royal Jester plays fairly simple Helloween-inspired melodic power metal. It’s high speed, ultra-melodic and sounds a bit like Freedom Call meets Dragonforce. Melodies carry the album, but there’s plenty of complex solos and ridiculously fast drumming. Christer Viklund’s vocals are perfect for power metal, and have that classic soaring power and drama. I suppose if there’s a downside here, it’s that the songs on Night is Young are essentially cookie-cutter power metal anthems, but Royal Jester does this kind of music so well it’s hard to hold that against them.

This is a fun one, and hopefully it won’t be the last we hear from this band. If you’re into upbeat, high speed melodic power metal – especially older Helloween, Freedom Call, Dragonforce, Lost Horizon and early Nocturnal Rites – you’ll want to check Royal Jester out.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas "Royal Jester" play Euro-Power Metal in 1985 style! 10 de agosto de 2010

`Royal Jester' is a brand new power metal band from Sweden and `The night is young' is their debut album. The band consists of lead singer Mattias Lindberg, guitarists Carl Allard and Christer Viklund and drummer Ted Nillson.

What perhaps separates `Royal Jester' from the majority of contemporary power metallers is the fact that the guys go for a mid 80s sound. So by playing the album one is under the impression that the guys are aiming to recreate the original sound of the genre as defined in the early "Helloween" albums (I am not comparing the band's material to that of Helloween, simply their approach.)

To what extent does this approach work for the band? Well from the first song to the last the album benefits from the simplicity directness and playfulness that defined the early days of power metal; Indeed `Royal Jester' do not tire the listener at any point in this debut, on the contrary they deliver a substantial dose of power metal that actually fills the listener with energy.

Still keeping in mind the retro power metal approach the band follows, one would expect a couple of potential hit tracks on `The night is young' (In `I want out'/'Eagle fly free' fashion); however one can not identify such standout tracks. Personal favourites include `Enter the mist', `Royal Jester', `The king has fallen' plus the playful/romantic `If you were mine'.

Overall, Royal Jester do a very consistent job on their debut and have been brave enough to write an album that very much celebrates the origins of Euro-Power metal as a genre.

Those are two words that don't necessarily get associated with each other in the same sentence, but in this case it is so true. Most metal heads will probably turn their nose up to Royal Jester's 80's inspired upbeat ballad sounding riffs and vocals. I, however, thoroughly enjoy listening to this music on my way to and from work and if you're anything like me you will too.
