I made a practice cake (the included one) the day I got it, and it was perfect. Held my breath, turned the pan upside down, and the cake just popped out, with all the little bees intact. I had a teeeeeny (we're talking 1mm thick) layer of batter stick in a few spots, but I had no shortening, and oiled it pretty sparingly, cause I'm stingy like that. I just didn't really know how to go about it, and erred on the side of less, to avoid a greasy cake top. Is that a thing? Next time I will use shortening, and more of it. Anyway, this cake is going to be perfect for a bee themed party (bee-day?), and I really like the recipe inside - a fresh, creme-less alternative to typical birthday cake, but still very much -cakey, and rich (there's a cup of butter in there, people, it ain't a skinny lemon tart by any stretch of imagination). It will be great with tea, or, as someone else pointed out, with lemon sorbet in the summer.
There are two sad things about this whole affair, one is that this pan makes my Wilton pan look really cheap, sad, and trashy. The other is that now I want more of their pans, in the other designs. Bottom line is, buy it, even if your husband is rolling his eyes on the other end of the couch. Totally worth it.
Alas for me, spacial and monetary constraints prevent me from getting EVERYTHING. Woez.
Still: my husband and I keep bees, so the bee-themed pans are must-haves for us! And this one is great! The detail is excellent, and it makes cakes that are sort of like cupcakes but easier.
I am contemplating how to do a dessert offering that uses both this pan and their wonderful beehive pan (which I also bought).
Practically speaking- apart from being gorgeous in design, these are sturdy and solid pans. The nonstick coating helps the cakes not to stick, and they are heavy enough to moderate heat in the oven.
I haven't tried the included recipe yet; I have a couple of recipes for honey cakes that I like. I have looked hard at the marzipan or fondant bees they use as decoration, and will probably make something similar when I do my hive-and-honeycomb dessert spread.
If I had infinite money and space, I'd buy all these shaped pans. (OK, maybe not the football stadium...) I can't manage that... but I'm delighted with the ones i do purchase!
Edited to add a pic of the completed birthday cake :)
