Descripción del producto
"The art book of the year, if not of the decade and possibly of the century.... The significance of this volume lies not so much in the quality of its insights - although the quality is very high and the insights are important - as in the richness, precision, and elegance of its style.... A meeting with the mind of Leo Steinberg is one of the most enlightening experiences that contemporary criticism affords." - Alfred Frankenstein, Art News "Not only one of the most lucid and independent minds among art critics, but a profound one." - Robert Motherwell "These essays are... part of the reality of contemporary art, and the book is a cultural event in its own right... a force in the spirit of our times." - Arthur C. Danto, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism"
Reseña del editor
Leo Steinberg's classic "Other Criteria" comprises eighteen essays on topics ranging from "Contemporary Art and the Plight of Its Public" and the "flat-bed picture plane" to reflections on Picasso, Rauschenberg, Rodin, de Kooning, Pollock, Guston, and Jasper Johns. The last, which Francine du Plessix Gray called "a tour de force of critical method," is widely regarded as the most eye-opening analysis of Johns' work ever written. This edition includes a new preface and a handful of additional illustrations.Ver Descripción del producto

Leo Steinberg's command of English language is astounding, not to mention that he's fluent in all major European languages as well. His precision and evocative power is enviable and literary and poetic expression merits attention on its own. His delicacy, taste, accuracy, tolerance makes him an ideal teacher and someone you wish to consult on difficult matters.
I already read several of his books and his magazine articles and find communion with his ideas quite pleasurable and profitable.
Other Criteria could easily be one of Steinberg's best books. It is indeed, as everyone says, a must-read. And the more I read it, the more I am convinced how courageous Steinberg is. Being an art history major myself, I was told a million times to eliminate the personal voice out of my paper, because it does not sound too "scholarly" and risk being "subjective." However, this kind of objectifying has gone to such a perverse degree that many scholars lose touch with what art is about. Art is, after all, deeply personal. Steinberg embraces just that, while miraculously maintains cool scholarly insights. I cannot say how much I love him. My only regret is that he passed away. Otherwise I would go to whatever university he teaches in.
