The problem with the case is that it's ugly and cheap. Like many other reviewers here, mine cracked through the simple stress of snapping it on and off once or twice, and now the only thing holding it together is the silicone sleeve. Dust and dirt tend to build up in the crevices of the case (requiring you to remove the case to clean it, which will inevitably break off the cheap snapping mechanism after one or two attempts); and my hard plastic screen cover has gotten fairly badly scratched in the 6 months I've had it, to the extent where it's noticeable during routine use.
Ultimately, you're left with a cheap plastic shell made of much weaker material than the phone itself and including a fairly obstructive screen cover, with a silicone covering over top of it that could be bought separately from the rest of the case for a fraction of the price. But I can't give it a completely negative review, because this case is my ace in the hole where I can say "at least I tried" when I inevitably get my phone run over by a stampeding rhinoceros or drop it in a deep fryer or something. Pretty much no case for a smartphone is actually worthwhile, but the Otterbox actually makes a bonafide attempt at serving its purpose, rather than a brightly colored token effort.
Something that I have always had a slight nag about with the cases is that they are difficult to take off. I understand they were manufactured to stay together so it has never been a huge concern with me. However, I ordered this Otterbox for my Galaxy Nexus, and after attempting to take it off for the first time after having it about a week to install a new battery I noticed that one of the clips had broken. I was aggravated that a clip would break so easily especially after only taking it off once (I never had an issue with this with the case for my Nexus One). So I put in the new battery and put the case all back together and it seems to be working fine.
About a week after the first clip breaking I had to do a battery pull due to user error on my part, and while taking the case apart again I was extremely careful as to not break another clip, but my attempt was in vain as another clip broke on the same side of the case!
The case still holds together fine and I haven't had any other issues with it but I am scared to take the case off again due to the fear of breaking another clip and the case not staying together at all.
I'm not sure if it was a design flaw or if it was due to me taking the case apart incorrectly but I have never had this issue before with my previous case.
1. The casing is very flimsy. I am bought otterbox products before and this is a much weaker and more elastic plastic that easily breaks. If I wasn't buying this from otterbox, i would have suspected it is a knockoff.
2. The screen "protector". When i bought this I bought it because one of the advantages was the screen protector it has on it's front part. HOWEVER, this is a very VERY low quality plastic. Those 99 cent screen protectors are better then the one they had. Also, it is stuck to the front piece so i couldn't replace it myself.
However, the WORSt part about it is that it is incredibly dirty. When i first opened it i could literally see the finger print marks on it from who ever must have packaged it. And no matter what i used to clean it, it left a film afterwards. It also gets very dusty very quickly and doesn't come off. I also had to keep opening up the case to clean the inside because the box has made my phone a dust magnet.
3. The two main pieces are connected by 4 very flimsy plastic "bumps" and holes. The first one broke the 4th time i opened it. Which one might argue is my fault except I had to keep opening it up because the dust kept getting in.
4. The rubber that goes around the casing afterwards is very stretchy. I suspected when i first opened it that it would eventually streach out and start to fall of and it has. Worst is that it sticks to the inside of your pocket and thus when I used more force to get the phone out, it would often stretch the rubber more.
This is a very poor quality product and I would NOT suggest it. This is not representative of the quality product otterbox makes for there other devices (namely iphone). Clearly otterbox is just leveraging there name to expand there market without any consideration for quality. While there main line products (for the iphone) are built well and are strong, this is a poor imitation for the android phones.
Now for the minor thing: The holster - more specifically, the little locking clip that holds the jaws open for the advertised 'stand' feature. You don't need it - the case and holster do exactly what they say they will without it - but since they make such a big deal out of being able to use the holster as a hands-free stand for media watching and (in my case) keeping the phone at an angle for the alarm clock, then it had better work. the first thing I noticed is that it was extremely frail, just a small bit of plastic for the jaws to be clipped to. every time I went to release the jaws I wondered if that would be the time the clip broke until - it did. Again, you don't need it and the case and holster are almost perfect - if they only hadn't tried to stuff one more feature into this thing, and such a flimsy feature at that.
You'll be pleased with the product - just don't try to use that media stand feature...
First, it is very bulky, but should protect this expensive phone pretty well. I'm still not 100% sure that I like the bulk, but am getting used to it.
I do know that I'm not real happy with how the phone clips into the holster. I used to have an Original Droid holster that the phone just slid in and held it really well, and was easy to get out. I would have preferred something like that!
My other problem with the holster is that they decided to make it into a stand as well. As I have seen in other reviews, the belt clip will get hung up on the stand clip when you are putting it on your belt. This results in belt clip not shutting on your belt and you can lose the holster and phone to the ground, thus the bulk of the case isn't bad.
The other thing about the belt clip is that the stand clip that holds the belt clip open broke within a couple of weeks. This whole thing was a poor design! If this tool is a holster, then why try and through a stand in also. The whole purpose is to keep the phone on your belt! If you want to add the stand feature anyways, then use solid material, like some spring metal, to make the stand clip. In stead, it just seems cheap when it breaks in a few weeks!!
Overall it does what it needs to do, but I would have preferred a simpler design that worked 100% of the time.
