Descripción del producto

This illuminating investigation takes a fresh look at the role of media in children's lives. An overview of the formidable challenges parents face and creative ways to overcome them are included, as are strategies for turning a home environment from "high-tech" to "high-touch." Moving beyond demonizing the media, this work, like none before it, articulates the difficulties of parenting in our depersonalized society. It offers hopeful alternatives for all parents wanting to protect children from, and teach children about, media's impact.

This book is such a gift. I have had the opportunity to hear a live presentation given by Gloria DeGaetano and was so moved by her passion, careful research and commitment to our future--the children of today. This book is such a gift. I have had the opportunity to hear a live presentation given by Gloria DeGaetano and was so moved by her passion, careful research and commitment to our future--the children of today. The book equals the passion I saw live and should be a perquisite for all Early Childhood teaching. The principles are timeless, the research spot-on and her passion is so inspiring.

I found Gloria's work absolutely fascinating. It offered a perspective rarely researched. I cannot believe she is not better known. thepic.org is a great resource to follow her other work and is a testament of her endless commitment and passion for our children.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas a must for every parent! 13 de junio de 2004

This book is a must read for every parent! We've all become too comfortable with the idea that the media (tv's, computers, movies, video games) are an integral part of our households. This book presents many important reasons why this practice has to stop. It details how the media has negatively impacted our families and resulted in children with serious problems. It offers suggestions on how to substitute "quality" family time instead of media time and what qualitites and attributes parents need to nurture and focus on to counter our industry-generated culture. I only wish I had this book when my children were still young!! but I'm passing it along to them to read in hopes that it will guide them when the grandchildren arrive.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Practical, enlightening, and inspiring 11 de julio de 2009

There aren't many books I read with a pencil, taking notes in the margins and underlining. This isn't because it is difficult or academic; it is actually a very easy read. It just made me think so much I had to study the book, not just read it. I have 4 kids and already tried not to put the media (TV, movies, advertising)in center place in our lives, but this book gave me new food for thought. For instance, she talked about how you can't buy a "princess" toy anymore, you have to buy a Cinderella toy. The media decides who the character will be. One teacher observes that kids don't pretend anymore, they reenact scenes they have already seen. But she isn't preachy or impractical, what I really loved was the practical ideas she gives for us to help our kids of various ages.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Fabulous Parenting Insights and Ideas 20 de octubre de 2004
Por A concerned parent - Publicado en Amazon.com

I found this book clearly details the enormity and specifics of what we, as parents, are up against when dealing with media influences in our homes, as well as what opportunities are being forfeited, at our children's expense, for them to grow into thinking, creative, nurturing individuals by continual consumption and bombardment of media. While Gloria DeGaetano is realistic in that media is a permanent part of our world, she, thankfully, offers a variety of concrete solutions for counteracting this influence, while providing background research to also empower the reader or parent. It is time we address this critical issue in our families and find the power to change before it is too late! Parenting Well in a Media Age is a great motivator for taking back our rightful role as the primary influence in the raising of our children!! This is a ground breaking book, necessary for the time we are living in!

Gloria DeGaetano has done an outstanding job of explaining the impact of the media on our childre. She specifically discusses how the developing brain is impacted, directly affecting children's development. But, she gives us hope by describing exactly what parents and educators can do to provide the things that all children need to develop their potential and grow up to be creative and healthy people. This book is pertinent to families and children from all cultures and backgrounds. I am a special education teacher and a mother of two. I have worked with children and their families for 26 years. If you can only read one parenting book, make it this one!
