If you do not have a small tool set for this kind of job you should strongly consider buying a battery that includes those. The extra $10 will be well worth it.
There are online videos to show you how to do this battery change but it really is quite simple. The hardest part was pulling the old battery loose from the case. The old tape was dried out and stuck pretty well.
With tools this is a 5 minute job. You'll need a small piece of thin two sided tape too.
If the tape had been included I would have rated it 5 stars.
I had to get a replacement, they asked for the number on the bad battery, I said, I have to take it apart to get the number, so they sent without. So far so good on the replaced battery--but I don't know how long it would last. Go up one star to three.
Update @ 06/24/2015:
It was good for the first day and then no longer holds charge. I had thought the problem was solved, so just did not pay attention, since I always have the GPS on a power adapter. But when I tried to use it without the charger, it messaged "battery low" and turned off. It would not hold a charge.
So far so good. It was easy to do. If they provided a piece of double-sided tape, would have been perfect. Will see how long it holds the charge.
Did come pre-charged so that was good.
I wasn't up for spending $100 for an out-of-warranty battery replacement, so I did a Google search that took me to a you-tube video with a demonstration of how to replace a Garmin battery. Looked easy enough, so I purchased this battery and a cheap set of tools on Amazon. (Search the website for: 8pc T6 T5 iPhone pentalobe, cross Opener Screwdriver Tool Kit. It is now only $1.75 + shipping.) Thankfully, the youtube video was right on. Installation was quite easy and straightforward and took under 15 minutes.
I must say the battery seems quite a bit better than the Garmin original and replacement. It charged up beautifully the first time and held the charge for a very long time. In addition, it seems to last a bit longer than the original battery during use. My only fear is that my infrequent use of the navigator may cause this battery to wear down prematurely as well. Only time will tell, but if so, I guess I'll just buy another until the 2009 maps are painfully obsolete.
Seller Power-O-Matic shipped item promptly and securely, so I would not hesitate to recommend the seller as well as the product.
