I had bought this recorder so that I could learn fiddle music. It's okay for that- perhaps more so with an accessory mic. We also record our children, for fun, and it's fine for that as well. Mostly I'm just disappointed I cannot download other fiddle tunes and play them back on one machine- I have to get a separate MP3 player.
The only drawback is that there is no removable memory card and there isn't a built-in USB plug (you have to carry the cord around with you). Although with 192 hours of recording time--it's doubtful that you're going to need the cord very often.
Unfortunately, the batteries are not rechargeable (just regular AAAs), but it hasn't been a problem yet, since she's been using it for about a month now to record all of her lectures. Time will tell.
It's great that the file can be dumped right into iTunes on her Mac (it records in a compatible format), unlike the other voice recorders that I've seen on Amazon, which can only record in WMA format (incompatible with iTunes). The voice comes out somewhat tinny on the internal speaker, but once it's imported into iTunes, it's not a problem.
I was really surprised at the quality of the recordings, since she sits 3-4 rows back.
Highly recommended. Very useful.
It has an excellent feature for this: one-touch record. You just hold the REC button down for a second, and it comes on live without having to turn the power on first. I had occasion to use it a few nights ago like this, and I was able to operate it in the dark. VERY useful feature.
I was a little worried that it would have a steep learning curve, but it doesn't; just read the instructions carefully and follow along and practice the various operations once or twice.
I gave it a five-star battery rating, but I really have no idea how long the battery will last; it's rated for 35 hours record time, but playback will shorten that.
It's also solidly built; I've had it fall out of my shirt pocket onto the hard floor -- twice, already -- with no damage. Dropping things like this often results in the battery cover coming off, but even that hasn't happened.
Sound quality is very clear from the little speaker.
I would recommend this item for those who don't need the advanced features available on more expensive recorders.
-Simply to use.
-High Quality sound
-very fast connection USB.
I'm using Mac OSX 10.4 (soon upgrading to snow leopard) I just plugged in the Philips LFH0602/00, immediately was read by my imac I found the file I wanted to download which was already an MP3 file and in virtually no time I'm listening to it on iTunes.
I was "far away" (5 feet more or less) from the person I was recording, using HQ and Low reduction noise settings. The voice came along pretty clear and I can boost it in itunes. I'm very pleased with the results and compatibility SPECIALLY AT THIS SUPER PRICE! Good job Philips! I recommend this Voice recorder to everybody that needs good quality and fast/simple computer connection.
Navigating through the menus on the device is simple; there really aren't too many options to choose from, which keeps the process pretty neat. The sound quality is great on the highest quality setting, but I can't say what it is for the other settings considering I have never used them.
