Descripción del producto

The “zombie apocalypse,” once on the fringes of horror, has become one of the most buzzworthy genres in popular culture. Now, in Plague of the Dead, Z.A. Recht delivers an intelligent, gripping thriller that will leave both new and die-hard zombie fans breathless.

The end begins with a viral outbreak unlike anything mankind has ever encountered before. The infected are subject to delirium, fever, a dramatic increase in violent behavior, and a one-hundred percent mortality rate. But it doesn’t end there. The victims return from death to walk the earth. When a massive military operation fails to contain the living dead it escalates into a global pandemic. In one fell swoop, the necessities of life become much more basic. Gone are petty everyday concerns. Gone are the amenities of civilized life. Yet a single law of nature remains: Live, or die. Kill, or be killed. On one side of the world, a battle-hardened general surveys the remnants of his command: a young medic, a veteran photographer, a brash Private, and dozens of refugees, all are his responsibility—all thousands of miles from home. Back in the United States, an Army colonel discovers the darker side of Morningstar virus and begins to collaborate with a well-known journalist to leak the information to the public...and the Morningstar Saga has begun.

This book is a reprint according to Amazon, so I'm guessing some of its popularity came from before the surge of zombie ebooks into the market. While I bet "Plague of the Dead" seemed fantastic before there was a lot of competition, nowadays it seems to different than the hundreds of other zombie books that are the same or better. I've read many of these stories, but this one doesn't strike me as memorable.

Z.A. Recht clearly was a decent writer, and I give him credit for creating an environment that kept the pages turning. However, the storyline stumbled along and it seemed to miss some perspective that would have helped it. The Morningstar Strain appears in Africa and nobody takes it seriously, of course. Then, as Africa becomes infected, the military decides to send forces to prevent its spread across Suez. I'm sure you can guess what happens, but then the story fastforwards to where America has now been overrun. Granted, the characters were mostly in the dark to the outside world during this time, but this felt rushed and I expected more development in how the homeland went from unconcerned to overrun.

As some reviewers have pointed out, the characters are cardboard and few were memorable. Some had similar names, making it tough to track who got killed and why other characters cared. Many talk and act in unbelievable ways. I'm no soldier, but my military friends would likely roll their eyes at some of the soldiers in this book. And I'm no NSA agent either, but I doubt such a person would care about two escaped prisoners during the zombie apocalypse. Even if one might have knowledge of a cure, it seems unlikely that someone would be willing to track them cross country, especially after attempts to catch them have resulted in losing their team to the undead. Furthermore, I find in tough to buy that the military wouldn't use better weaponry once the outcome of Suez was known. Even if smart bombs and napalm was in short supply, I'm pretty sure there's no shortage of atomic bombs.

Obviously in fiction, we have to suspend a little disbelief, but this book just got a bit over the top. The action sequences in Suez and on the dock were top-notch, but the rest of the book felt cliched, like that little "extra" was missing. The zombie apocalypse genre is overloaded with competition, and this book is easily beat by many other works. I give it 3 stars for good actions sequences, but an unbalanced storyline and dry characters. Unless you love any kind of zombie story, I recommend taking a pass.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Zombies - from Africa to the U.S. 1 de julio de 2012

"Plague of the Dead," the first book in the Morningstar Strain trilogy, is more fun than a barrel full of pus- and gut-filled zombies.

The epidemic starts out in Africa and is soon all over the world. Army General Sherman and a small contingent of soldiers and civilians, have their hands full, fighting off a wave of zombies at the Suez Canal.

No one wants to believe the doom and gloom predictions of Dr. Anna Demilio, USAMRIID, until it is far too late.

General Sherman and a small group of survivors catch a ride on the naval ship USS Ramage back to the Pacific Northwest of the United States and all parties head inland, trying to meet up and figure out how to stay alive.

Zombies, zombies and more zombies - and uninfected humans worse than the zombies! I can hardly wait for book two of the trilogy Thunder and Ashes.

Okay, this is the last zombie trilogy I am reading for awhile (not including those already started). It has been seven years of almost nothing but zombie apocalypse tales. I am glad I am going out on a high note. This tale is beautifully told with believable characters and storyline. I will most definitely be continuing this series and hope the rest can live up to this gem.

If you like zombie novels, this is a great series. Some inconsistencies (due to original author passing, RIP ZA Recht) but I like this series a lot, and I enjoy as much as the Day by Day Armageddon or Zombie Fallout series.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas The most "realistic" zombie book I've read 20 de marzo de 2011
Por P. Gross - Publicado en

Right from the start this book uses "real life" scenarios to catch and hold your attention. The ebola-like symptoms of the disease touches a zombiefan's deep imaginations---the "what if" and the even deeper "it could happen like this..." thoughts spring to mind. With the tie-in to an actual disease instead of the "it came from outer space" theme makes it a little more.......possible ;)

While there were several "literary liberties" taken in the book, they were mixed in with the realism enough to be believable; or at least acceptable. lol

I don't want to have to give any spoiler alerts...

Great character development along with the tracking of progress of different groups, helped keep me involved in the book all the way through. It was hard to put down. (although I had to to check the windows and strange noises now and then :D)

Definitely, one of the best (believable) zombie novels I've read in quite some time. Mr Recht has the same imagination as me, but fortunately he has much better writing skills.

Definitely worth a read if you ever have thought "it could happen"

I seriously hope this is made into a movie/miniseries soon. Especially with the popularity of all things zombie.
