5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas One of the bettter bank robbery movies I have seen and the cast is over the top good. 25 de febrero de 2016

Fantastic cast and really well written bank robbery movie.
Surprised that "Hollywood" is still allowing Jody Foster to make movies after her very public support of Mel Gibson... classy women in another perfect role. Obviously this cast loves and respects her and is powerful enough to say "dott dot" to the studio tribal heads. But one of the secrets of the movie makes up for it I suppose. She may be told via opportunities that she has to do a number of these kinds of themed movies to get her A list title back or at least to make her own movies?

Denzel is great as almost always, Christopher Plumber is perfectly cast except he is the wrong ethnic group given the story... but does a perfect job... William Defoe isn't given much here to work with or in my opinion directed well, that is, under used... Clive Owen is perfectly cast as well, would make a good James Bond but will not get it because he doesn't have the dark side needed.

The movie proves again that the thing after the the script that is most important in a successful movie is casting followed by directing. Spike Lee does an excellent job over all.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas It's a fun movie, plot-wise 17 de marzo de 2016

It's a fun movie, plot-wise. I was somewhat surprised this was directed by Spike Lee -- much less obvious social commentary than in his other movies, which was was a relief. Not as heavy-handed as he often is. It was well-directed by someone who knows what he's doing and doesn't need to provide anything other than a very solidly made movie. Thank you, Spike! Denzel Washington is a standout as the Detective who takes this big case (his superior is out on vacation) and Chiwetel Edjiofor is his partner. I find Chiwetel Edjiofor to be very attractive, and he is also quite believable as a NY cop. Denzel is his usual cool, hip, likable self, and very believable in this role. It fit him perfectly. The two work off one another nicely. Clive Owen -- just another amazing British actor, lol! He's so inside the character it's hard to know where technique comes in. Completely invisible (technique) and wonderfully compelling. Christopher Plummer, another accomplished British actor (Canadian by birth, British by training) who aces everything he does. It's a subtle, complex role and he sails through it as though it's a walk in the park. Jodie Foster was very interesting as a power-broker female. Incredibly pleasant and ruthless at the same time. An unusual combination that she pulled off brilliantly. I didn't actually like her character, but I admired her. Willem Dafoe in kind of a throw-away role, imo. Nothing particularly stands out in his performance, but the role isn't really fleshed out, either. I could see many other actors (or even actresses) in this role, and perhaps a comic actor to give the movie a few more humorous moments, although Denzel and Chiwetel are funny in some scenes, and there are other humorous bits throughout. But the movie could perhaps have used a few more light moments. However, it's not heavy, heavy, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys the cop-against-master-criminal genre. The movie itself has a wonderful twist and you know it's coming, as Clive Owen's character narrates from the beginning and intimates it's not a straightforward story.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Imperfect, but riveting. 26 de marzo de 2017

You have to pay really close attention to understand what's going on. I agree with another reviewer who said you could take Jodie Foster out of the film without losing much. However, I suspect reviewers who dismiss this film as the "same old story" didn't really get it. Lots of good acting, and although the film sags for a bit in the middle, it's generally well paced, suspenseful, and funny in an oddball sort of way.

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Left me saying, "huh"? 17 de febrero de 2016

I want to watch the movie again because I'm just certain I missed something. Something important. This film has it all - stellar director, great actors - but maybe the story is too complex. Bank heist, hostage situation, Denzel tough guy swagger all over the place but things take a major twist. What you thought was happening really wasn't. But what did happen exactly? Did the lead bad guy do all this to expose a war criminal and nothing else? What did Denzel's character wind up doing after all? The potential for me to look really stupid is high because I just can't believe this would have been so unclear. Again, I must have missed something. But, sans a second watch, this movie just left me saying, "huh?".

Watched this movie many times to get all the details. Denzel Washington acting as Detective Frazier is outstanding. Every player in this movie was truly believable. While watching I was in the bank.
