+ I connected the C-200 to my network, my TV and the power and it immediately found all components.
+ Playing media from a network place, from an internal or external drive or from the internal blue-ray drive was no problem at all.
+ The remote works great even if I'm far away and not pointing at the C-200.
+ It plays all the formats I have on my harddrive.
+ Setup of network (incl. wireless with separate module) is easy (after installation of latest firmware!).
- I installed some APPs but most of them did not work.
- Music playlists are supported but very unconvenient to set up.
- The main buttons on the remote are intuitive but some of the sub-functions are hard to control.
As I bought the device mainly to stream media from my NAS and to watch blue-ray I'm pretty happy with it. There is room for improvement but generally it works great.
It has been rock solid for me. I came from many years of using a media pc and I was
ready for a turn key solution.
I am a tech guy but I am pretty sure my wife could have plugged this in and figure out
how to play my movies over a network share.
The unit itself is big compared the other media players. Its about the size of a settop box.
Has more outputs than the other units although most will stick w/ hdmi.
Remote ok. I have the unit in a cabinet so I like it being rf, but if you have a universal remote
you might be disappointed. There is also an iphone app you can use as a remote and has nice features
to search and play shoutcast and youtube videos.
I would rate this 5 stars but a couple of things I don't like.
It will not play some old home movies I have. I get a/v sync problems and video is must faster than is should be.
Not fixed in the latest firmware. I haven't looked into this much maybe a solution don't know.
No native netflix support. I have seen the interfaces on two other media players and they suck but at least they are there. Apparently you can get this working using playon, but again I don't see this as turn key.
interface lacking. coming from a media pc the interface navigation is ok, but lacks eye candy
No native support for imdb and movie cover art descriptions. You can set this up using yamj. Google it, but
again not turn key.
For sure it definitely more expensive than the other units. Hardware is more robust and it supports more video formats from what I have read. Most of the other units are based of the same chipset (I think broadcom) so if you have a problem with one you will likely have a problem with the other.
Unit appears to be working for now.
But...and this is a major but...this gadget is not a plug-and-play device. It must be configured to do what you want it to do and that is not always intuitive or easy. The included instructions are inadequate to show you how to set up much and even the downloadable user's guide only covers the basic functions, but...and this is a grateful but...there is a wonderful online wiki site that will answer anything you need to know. Just be prepared to spend some time doing your research. Because the PCH C-200 is so versatile and can do so many different things for so many different users...it is not a simple device.
If you are an enthusiast and are tired of half baked functionality from media streamers then this may be what you are looking for. I have owned three steamers previous to this one and have returned them all because they just wouldn't do the things I want. PCH does all my wish list and more, but I had to work at it. If you like to tinker, you will be very happy. If you want to plug it in and expect more than basic streaming, it isn't happening...there are much cheaper products out there for that.
The company frequently updates the firmware with bug fixes and features. You will have to add some hardware depending on what you want it to do for you, for example a DVD drive or Blue Ray drive or a hard disk drive. The price includes a Blue Ray license that is kept current thru the firmware updates. The device is picky about what you attach to it or attach it to. Examples include network switches or wireless dongles. It deserves a full five stars but will probably only get it from the non-technically challenged.
This equipment is the type that creates a cult-following among hobbyists. Not your grandmother's media streamer but OMG, what a machine!
This machine still continues to amaze me. The software has been updated several times...primarily to cover the newer BD releases and fix a few bugs. I simply love the full menu BD capability of this device. It is like using a BD player except you are streaming from your NAS. I find that BD ISO copies on the NAS and use of a Gigabit Cat5E LAN works the best. You may have to experiment with the settings a bit but the end result is worth it!
This gadget continues to satisfy! Several software updates since I last updated this review. It continues to perform flawlessly. I still stream BD ISO files over my wired WAN from my Synology NAS. Most of the set-up problems I had originally had years ago seem to have been fixed in the software updates. Sadly this system is not available anymore and I notice that Amazon has even quit carrying its replacement the C-300. Maybe th at means that a new system is coming...the C-400??
