All I can say about Mitski's sound is that if Annie Clark were the front woman for The Pixies (circa 1990) and they got a gig to play The Black Lodge in Twin Peaks you might come close to a proper descriptor. The record is already blowing up and deservedly so. It's really good and definitely equal to the hype that's been building around it.

Saw the album cover on the Amazon homepage and decided to listen to a sample. Bought it that night, came in today, and oh my God, who is this girl? Melancholy, unique, lilting, punk, real. She's pulled off something shady and beautiful on Puberty 2. I haven't been drawn into a sound this immediately in a long time.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas One of the best albums of 2016, without a doubt. 8 de marzo de 2017

I'll keep the review short and sweet, since there are plenty of pro or near-pro reviews already here.

This was my first introduction to Mitski as it will be for most listeners. I was drawn to the album after seeing it listed in the top albums of 2016, and I have to say, it's deserving of top 5.

To start, the style is reminiscent of St. Vincent. If you like Annie Clark, you'll almost surely love Mitski. They have very similar voices and often drop with sarcasm and darkness, but Mitski perhaps has more vulnerability woven into her songs. They are beautiful and play on the identity crisis many twenty somethings face, thus the name, "Puberty 2." Many people go into their early 20's thinking they were a "full adult," but somewhere in there people start feeling inadequate again.

Mitski plays upon this theme, trying to find a sense of being or confidence for that final transition to adulthood, and she does an amazing job of conveying it.

I hate giving highlights for albums I enjoy as a collective experience, but there are some songs that stand incredibly well on their own.

1) Your Best American Girl - Easily the single to lead the album, it has all the angst and hard hitting guitar crunch of the best early 90's rock anthems. The lyrics and wordplay are some of the best I've seen in a while; simultaneously being snarky and uncertain.

2) Happy - Could have been a St. Vincent song. Creepy and fun, it's a perfect start for the album and sums up the theme well.

3) I Bet on Losing Dogs - An important transition piece, almost heartbreaking to listen to. It's a piece about rooting for the underdog, even if it makes you a loser too. Incredibly empathetic and downbeat.

Overall, I can't recommend the album enough. It's probably my most listened to album of the past year, and I expect it will continue to get play for some time to come.

At equal points raw and beautiful, this album is another great release by one of my favourite musicians. Exploring ideas of loss, love, belonging and knowing when to quit, her songs are introspective while managing to avoid the whinier sides of 'indie' music and relatable without being soulless or indistinct. A Burning Hill is one of the softest heartbreaking songs I've ever heard, but if you see her perform live (and you should), wear ear protection - she knows how to work that guitar and she's not playing around.

This is really well produced and performed indie rock. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's heartfelt and honest. If you're a patient listener this will definitely be worth a shot. It's actually one of my favorite albums of 2016.
