This brilliantly curated pictoral history - including postcards from Morrissey to a loyal fan alongside early shots of the Smiths, on and off stage - unpicks the scene's influence and influences, showcases terrific photographs of bands both celebrated and largely forgotten, and highlights the stylistic commonalities within a musically varied subculture.@thequietusBRSam Knee's weighty new tome is a beautiful pictorial look at indie music and fashion culture in a golden era sandwiched between punk and baggy. It's all about the fashions and sounds of a heady creative period in indie music during a depressing climate of unemployment and Thatcher.@dickiefeltonsBR Knee's anthology underscores what we already know: fashion and music thrive and feed off one another. When you think of your favorite band or look up a new one, you almost inevitably seek out a visual reference so as to hold them in your mind's eye. An artist's image and music is inextricably tethered and A Scene In Between draws these threads together beautifully@nosieyBRhe book celebrates the underground 80s indie guitar scene in the UK illustrated in 192 pages of carefully sourced, and in some cases, never-seen-before images of key musicians from this era. It was written and compiled by Sam Knee who, after being introduced to band Cramps aged 15, spent his teenage years being a true eighties indie boy crimping his dyed black hair and wearing Shelley's Chelsea boots. Both educational and inspirational, the book takes a fashion trip from 1980-1988 featuring well known eighties musical acts including The Smiths, Primal Scream and Orange Juice mixed up with lesser known talents like Televised Personalities and The June Brides@lazyoaf

Reseña del editor

The mid to late 1980s indie scenes in Britain from C86 to Shoegaze are a lost moment in music history. There’s been much coverage of punk, of post-punk and of the acid-house rave era of the early 90s, but the scene surrounding independent guitar-based music of the mid-80s has been largely overlooked. A Scene In Between looks at the fashions, personalities, and youth cultures of that era. Bands featured include: Television Personalities, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Talulah Gosh, Loop, The Pastels, Vaselines and more obscure bands such as The Shop Assistants, Boy Hairdressers, Flatmates and countless others. Sam Knee has reconnected with a vast network of people and resources, to unearth literally hundreds of previously unpublished photographs of the people, clubs and bands of the time. Taking a sartorial angle, he looks at the anoraks, oversized jumpers, leather trousers, bowlcut hairdos, blouse shirts, stripey tees box jackets that were so popular at the time. He also uses his understanding of music history to look at the diverse influences behind the looks and the sounds of the bands – from the sharply dressed mods of the 60s to West coast and Texas psychedelia. Contributions from members of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine make this a must have for music and fashion aficionados alike.
