Mandarin Companion is a series of easy-to-read novels in Chinese that are fun to read and proven to accelerate language learning. Every book in the Mandarin Companion series is carefully written to use characters, words, and grammar that a learner is likely to know.
Level 1 is intended for Chinese learners at an upper-elementary level. Most learners will be able to approach this book after one to two years of formal study, depending on the learner and program. This series is designed to combine simplicity of characters with an easy-to-understand storyline which helps learners to expand their vocabularies and language comprehension abilities. The more they read, the better they will become at reading and grasping the Chinese language.

Obviously you need to have a basic understanding of Chinese to start with, but for the 300 character level it should be just right. I'm at ~900 characters and I found this quite easy to read, but I did actually learn some new words. It's a really good way to reinforce grammar patterns. I have Kindle editions for some of the other books in this series and they are also nice (the text, links and illustrations work flawlessly), but if you're considering the paper book you won't be disappointed!
Very interesting story
Lots of repetition of vocabulary and basic grammar structures
Detailed listing and explanations of the grammar used in the book available online
New vocabulary terms identified with pinyin and definitions
No audio or link to downloadable audio files to listen to the story being read by a native speaker
Twice the price of other comparable graded readers
No traditional character option (edit: they now sell a separate traditional character version)
Overall, this is a very good graded reader for the advance elementary to intermediate Chinese language student. This was the first Chinese book I was really able to read all the way through without constantly checking vocabulary or grammar.
However, with the price being twice as high as other readers and no audio files to strengthen listening, speaking and comprehension skills it was hard to justify giving it more stars. For less money one can buy a comparable e-book from Chinese Breeze and also the book version with an attached CD (both available on Amazon) that includes the audio in MP3 format. Most students will find this to be a much more effective way to increase their overall fluency than a product from Mandarin Companion that charges a comparable price but excludes the audio. If this rather substantial flaw gets corrected then I'll be sure to raise the rating.
The Secret Garden is a delightful story and this Chinese adaptation is well done. I look forward to reading the entire set of books from Mandarin Companion.
I think it would be great if Mandarin Companion had all the books in print format.
John Pasden, you are a good language teacher. I wish my German teacher had your gift to teach a foreign language!
Any plans to go beyond a level 2?
Vocabulary not draining or drilled in by repeatedly stating the same information over and over.
Long enough (70 ish pages)
Nice little definitions on page bottom
Grammar explanations for the chapter in back of book
Comparisons with other text books
Vocabulary listed in the back and on each page

This was a very minimal in difficulty read for me. I have practiced up to around the 9th chapter in the second integrated Chinese book and underwent 3 semesters of Chinese at College.
