Shortly after her 50th birthday, Ellen begins to believe her husband of twenty-eight years is cheating on her - again. Late nights, aloof behavior, missing dinners - they all lead up to an increase in suspicion that weighs heavily on her mind as she wonders whether or not she should trust her instincts. She doesn't know what to do or how to handle the situation and her friends are no help. One friend advises her to go have an affair, while another tells her she's being paranoid and is driving him away. Who to believe? In the midst of all this, she has a teenage daughter who's acting out, and Ellen is overwhelmed trying to keep her family together and her sanity in place... Then Jeffrey disappears. From that moment on, Ellen feels her world crashing down around her, and everything she thought she knew about her family proves to be just the surface of a very deep iceberg.

This book was outstanding, well-written and fast-paced. Ellen was so realistic that I could relate to her every decision, her fears, frustration and helplessness as though these emotions were my own. I was on the edge of my seat all the way to the stunning ending, and I felt I was right in the midst of the drama as it played out.

Can you overcome the loss of trust following a cheating spouse? In Ms. Ambrose's realistic portrayal of Ellen's situation, you can understand how a woman would feel following an affair, how difficult it is to regain the trust that has been severed, and how dramatically it impacts an entire family. Written with a touch of humor, you can't help but sympathize with Ellen's insecurities and laugh at her foibles. In addition to the very real situations, there was an intense element of suspense as Ellen struggled to find out what Jeffrey was up to, and you're anxiously turning pages to get to the shocking end. I can't recommend this book highly enough, for it definitely left an impact with me. If you're looking for a fast, lifelike piece of women's fiction, look no further. You won't regret it.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A roller-coaster ride... 31 de enero de 2014

...for me as a reader. Others have presented an overview of the plot, so I won't repeat that here.

The first few chapters had me mentally yelling at Ellen for being such a doormat. I mean, YELLING. I couldn't believe she was regarded as a "crystal apple-winning teacher," and yet allowed -- yes, allowed her no-good husband to walk all over her AND alienate her daughter in the process, and that she was literally an ostrich, hiding her head in the sand and letting him run their lives financially (yes, run even though ruin would be applicable in this case). I almost quit reading in disgust, but stubbornness kept me going. I'm glad I did.

Once Keeley entered the fray, things got better. Her ditsyness lightened my whole outlook, and I began to see the dark humor. Of course, I began to root more fervently for Ellen at that point, and stopped yelling at her. As Ellen revealed facets of her upbringing and how her father and mother were toward each other, it was obvious that Ellen was merely (at that point) a reflection of her parents, and I became more sympathetic toward her.

As the mystery unfolded (and it surprised me that there was a mystery involved ... I thought it was simply out and out philandering and nefarious financial doings) and matters became more intense, I couldn't nor wouldn't stop reading.

I enjoyed the ending. While there is still a bit of a mystery (no spoilers here), there is also the hint of a possible happiness on the horizon for Ellen, and doggone it, she deserves it. I think she became a stronger person as a result of everything Jeffrey put her through, and a better mother, to boot.

I congratulate Ms. Ambrose...every reader needs a virtual roller coaster ride now and then to make one recognize the value of an interesting book!

What's a woman to do when she hits the milestone age of fifty, has a cheating husband and a rebellious seventeen year-old daughter? And the husband suddenly disappears? She obsesses about her marriage, soaks in the hot tub and searches for her missing husband of course!

Ellen Dunwell had just turned fifty years old when a week later her life turned upside down. Married to successful dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Dunwell for twenty-eight years, this Scottsdale, Arizona couple has had their share of ups and downs in their marriage. Two years ago Jeffrey had an affair and left Ellen for a week, only to return to their marriage hat in hand full of apologies and promises that it will never happen again. But now two years later Ellen is once again suspicious about Jeffrey's possibly cheating with his new young and perky medical assistant Keeley Wilder. Ellen begins questioning the trust she has in Jeffrey to the point where she begins obsessing about their marriage and her overactive imagination is put on overdrive!

With blocked calls and hang ups; a husband who comes home late every night and doesn't return phones calls; a constant battle with their rebellious daughter; friends who give her a range of advice to either suck it up or have an affair; to a creepy twenty year old neighbor boy who is a peeping tom ... it's enough to send any woman over the edge ... that is until Jeffrey suddenly disappears from his medical office, and Ellen has to put on her sleuth cap and go in search of her missing hubby, only to get caught in a web of intrigue and danger that could put her life at stake!

Sex, Lies & Hot Tubs is an entertaining story full of drama, mystery and wry humor that will keep you turning the pages. Author Elissa Ambrose weaves an intriguing tale told in the first person narrative by the quirky protagonist Ellen Dunwell, who takes the reader along for the ride as her crazy marital life story unfolds before her eyes. Ellen's story is full of humor, romance, drama, mystery and surprises ... the twists and turns that Ellen encounters in her marriage and in her search for her missing husband Jeffrey grabs the reader's attention and keeps them guessing what will happen next.

The author has created a quirky cast of characters who quickly pulls the reader into their lives. I found myself at odds with Ellen's character, I wavered back and forth between wanting to shake her because of her nativity over her marriage and Jeffrey's cheating ways, only to make me turn around and embrace her when she finds her backbone during the search for Jeffrey. I know I wouldn't have been so forgiving if my husband had a wandering eye. I have to admit that I loved Ellen's gritty sense of humor, I sympathized with her insecurities and loved how she was able to laugh at her own foibles. Her sleuthing abilities kept me in stitches, their was some pretty hilarious instances that she found herself in that made the story that much more entertaining. The supporting cast of characters added their own unique personalities to the story: husband Jeffrey and bratty daughter Claire were not my favorite people; neighbor Sherryl Turners, whose "be grateful you have a husband" speech made me grit my teeth; Sherryl's creepy peeping tom son Eric, just ewwww ... enough said; co-worker and friend Patricia "Trish" Manning, was a hoot; and Jeffrey's ditzy and naive medical assistant Keeley Wilder, *rolling my eyes*, all made the story that much more interesting.

With great attention to detail and description of the Arizona and Mexico settings; a humorous first person narrative; engaging character dialogue and interactions; and an intriguing mystery thrown into the mix, Sex, Lies & Hot Tubs kept me laughing and thoroughly entertained!

Sex, Lies & Hot Tubs is a fast paced witty story that has enough comedy, mystery romance, and real life drama that will keep you hooked until the surprising and shocking ending!

Really more of a Black Comedy than a mystery. The story line is intriguing and there are a number of surprised throughout the book. I thought the study questions at the end was an unusual touch for this type of book.

Make no doubt about it this is a book about adultery, deception, and the human condition. You may not like many of the characters as they tend to be needy or weak willed. Hang on till the end it does end up making sense and several of the characters grow while others get what they deserve.

Not a romance, kind of a mystery, really a black comedy. There are some funny parts and some really uncomfortable parts as well as some R rated language and discussion of sex.
