Why we all deserve a life worth living and a death worth dying for
‘Most men don’t fear death. They fear those things – the knife, the shipwreck, the illness, the bomb – which precede, by microseconds if you’re lucky, and many years if you’re not, the moment of death.’
When Terry Pratchett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his fifties he was angry - not with death but with the disease that would take him there, and with the suffering disease can cause when we are not allowed to put an end to it. In this essay, broadcast to millions as the BBC Richard Dimblebly Lecture 2010 and previously only available as part of A Slip of the Keyboard, he argues for our right to choose - our right to a good life, and a good death too.

A quick death by accident or sudden severe illness is a blessing many of us don’t appreciate until we are confronted with the inconvenience, embarrassment and often the pain of protracted illness or fatal injuries or worse the loss of self. The question becomes must we leave it to God and chance to decide or should we cut the suffering short.
Would you watch your old dog drag himself around crying when his meds wear off and the new batch hasn’t kicked in yet? When he takes no joy in seeing the sunrise or you or his food bowl do you make him stay in the world until his body gives out?
Read, think, look around you and re read before you make a decision. Then support legislation to back up your decision in either direction. And remember you too WILL Shake Hands With Death one day.
How do you want to do it?
Should you have a choice?
