Reseña del editor
"I wanted to say this morning, only you ran off ... sorry if I was rude.' The boy from the boat grineed, looking straight at me. 'You surprised me, that's all. The scar' - he touched his face - 'took me by surprise. I didn't mean to be rude.' I gaped at him. Nobody ever, ever mentioned the scars."
An against-the-odds teen love story shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize.
Ugly people don’t have feelings. They’re not like everyone else. They don’t notice if you stare at them and turn away. And if they did notice, it wouldn’t hurt them. They’re not like real people. Or that’s what I used to think. Before I learned . . . After the car crash that leaves her best friend dead, Jenna is permanently scarred. She struggles to rebuild her life, but every stare in the street, every time she looks in the mirror, makes her want to retreat further from the world. Until she meets Ryan. Ryan's a traveller. When he and his mother moor their narrow boat on the outskirts of a village, she tells him this time it will be different. He doesn't believe her; he can't imagine why this place shouldn't be as unwelcoming as the rest. Until he meets Jenna. But as Jenna and Ryan grow closer, repercussions from the crash continue to reverberate through the community. And then a body is found . . .
A story of prejudice and courage, brimming with mystery. Perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Jenny Valentine and Jenny Downham.

I loved having the chapters divided between the to characters, so you could understand their feelings in a better way.
The only thing that I didn't like it was the ages of them, they were to young for me to manage all the things that they passed through, but still it was a really original and credible story, it gave me something to think about it.
Jenna is a strong, vibrant and understandably angry teenage girl who is badly disfigured in a car accident. In the aftermath, she not only has to deal with the death of her best friend but also with her own recovery, fears, disgust and loneliness. Ryan is a "traveller" and lives with his bi-polar mother on a narrow boat and they roam from town to town through the canal system in Britain. The story revolves around the individual struggles of Jenna and Ryan as well as their friendship and growing feelings for each other. A lot happens in this book (fear, death, mystery, cruelty, new friendships, betrayal, tolerance, acceptence and love)but the writing is excellent and the author keeps the story flowing beautifully.
I honestly couldn't put this book down, it really is that good, at least I think so. I like books that have some edge to them and this one certainly does.Even the ending is perfect and I can't ask for more than that. It's nice not to be left hanging for a change. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Skin Deep is a book about two really imperfect characters going through their own stuff and becoming friends first. It was adorable and very swoony watching the relationship grow between Ryan and Jenna. Jenna was a bit too young for my usual tastes (she is only 14), but it worked here. She felt 14 and her innocence and insecurities only added to her likeability as a character. Ryan was also layered and just lovely. He had some great lines in this.
This book does mention some mature issues, but does not go into details. Except for the kissing, very detailed kisses...:)
