This glorious new release from Sony celebrates Doris Day the singer and Miss Day herself had a hand in selecting the two and a half dozen songs that will have the listener appreciating Miss Day's ageless artistry.

Doris Day is known by many for her nearly 40 motion pictures - films that made her the number one female box-office star of all time - a title she holds to this day. However, as a singer, there are few who can hold a candle to Day's warm expressive voice and remarkable ability to convey her obvious delight in singing - whether an upbeat tune, an emotional love song or something closer to jazz. She does it all amazingly well.

This collection runs the gamut. There are the well-loved songs from her beloved movies including two Oscar winners, "Secret Love" and "Whatever Will Be, Will Be" and another that should have won, "It's Magic". You'll hear "On Moonlight Bay", "Pillow Talk" and three from her amazing award-winning film, "Love Me or Leave Me", as well as a pair from "Jumbo", a seriously underrated musical film from the 1960's. No one before or since has sung the Rodgers and Hart classics, "My Romance" and "Little Girl Blue" with the exquisite phrasing and brilliant intonation that Doris Day brings to these songs.

You'll also find a number of great musical moments from Miss Day's outstanding output of Columbia albums from the 50's and 60's including her classic 1960's duet with Andre Previn. "In Love in Vain" as sung by Miss Day may be one of the finest recordings ever committed to vinyl by any artist - male or female - in recording history.

"With a Smile and a Song" is the perfect primer for someone who wants to discover Doris Day's exceptional range as a recording star. For the rest of us, it's a joyous reminder of why she continues to delight new generations with her inimitable smile and way with a song.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Sony Music's new Doris Day set is their first official American release in 13 years and by far the best in recent memory! 3 de abril de 2012

American fans are in for an absolute treat as they are getting a really cute double CD set released to coincide with Doris Day's April 3rd birthday (today) and a movie marathon which is currently taking place on America's Turner Classic Movies channel. Best of all the DAY-lightful new set contains a stellar song selection chosen by darling Doris Day. That's right folks the Grammy Award-Winning Singer was personally involved on this music project selection her favourite movie tunes and studio recordings!

We have to say we think the new set towers above most Doris Day music compilations released in recent memory. Not only does it offer 30 must-have song choices but these are wrapped up in very nicely designed packaging. Oh and crucially the price of this double CD is not that dissimilar to the recent UK release `Ultimate Collection` which was only a single CD.

What we were most impressed about was for once we get a compilation which uses a "previously unpublished" cover sleeve shot - the photo in question was notably taken by the acclaimed Hollywood photographer Leo Fuchs who snaps the singer at "work" in the recording studio. The rear sleeve then features another cheery publicity shot of Ms. Day from her 1960s film "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" - one we know to be a big favourite of hers and ours too!

Overall we think Doris and Sony Music have done an excellent job at collaborating here as what they have delivered is a fabulous introduction into Doris Day's career as a singer!!

Just as our stores (i.e. Abercromby & Fitch; GAP; Macy's; Best Buy et. al.) are being polluted by loud, irritating and ear-drumming noise parading as music, along comes this spectacular "OLDIE" from the girl, we as pilots, painted on our plane's engines time and again! Proving that, as Grouchy Marx said: "it's time to come back to class, better nouveau than never!" Here is a slice of Americana so thoroughly classic and timelessly, that this 'buy' from AMAZON for this two CD set is a pure steal (How about two day delivery at $13.95!). Think of it, Doris Day was 88 years old this past Tuesday (April 03, 2012), was interviewed by Terry Gross of NPR and sounded for all the world as the legend she is. I can write this, our classic stations in Chicago (WFMT, WBEZ) are the worlds persistent purveyors of ads, travel, dinners, condo's, trailers, cars, pianos, luxury nonsense and sundry goods to the point that their announcers are audible constant billboards without equal. I say, switch to a good CD, like Doris Day's "With a Smile and a Song" and bring a moment of peace in this ever elevating decibel war of hawking deals, scams and come-ons. Hooray to Apple, Amazon and TCM for bring a modicum of sanity in this sea of specious sounds slushing around us. Oh yes, the record is sparkling, lively reminiscing and utterly enjoyable. GO!

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Nice collection! 8 de abril de 2012

I'm a huge fan of Doris Day's music. I own all 23 of her studio albums and soundtracks. I listen to her most every day. When I heard about this new CD, I thought it might be just yet another best of type collection, but it's a bit more than that. This is a very good collection and there's four or five songs here that are new to me! This set, of course, picks heavily from her movie songs.

If you don't have any Doris Day CD's I'd first recommend Golden Girl (The Columbia Recordings 1944-1966) or Complete Doris Day With Les Brown first, but for the price, this CD is pretty hard to beat.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Doris Day: "With a Smile and a Song" CD Review 16 de junio de 2012

I loved this new compilation of Doris Day hits presented in a 2-CD set. Disc 1 includes "It's Magic" from her first movie, "Romance on the High Seas" along with probably her most recognized hit, "Que Sera Sera" and two of my very favorites, "Shaking the Blues Away" and Love Me or Leave Me" from her movie, "Love Me or Leave Me" with James Cagney which many consider to contain her best dramatic performance. Disc 2 contains fifteen of perhaps some of her less "commercial" or less-recognized recordings such as "Easy to Love", "With a Smile and a Song", and "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps." Regardless of one's memories or recognition of Doris' recordings and movies, all selections convey Doris' natural warmth and sincerity delivered via that distinctive, seamless voice. Thank you, Doris, for continuing to please your fans even at the age of 88. Real beauty is timeless!
