Lynne I believe that you may have saved my mind. Two years ago I was a Bank Manager and was held at gunpoint by one of three gunmen. This gunman and I spent quality time in my office and by that I mean he tore up my left arm and shoulder along with kicking me, and hitting me with the gun. The worst assault was to my mind when they decided to line us up and pretend that they were going to shoot us in the head, they didn't, and finally left the bank. I remember that I felt numb, like this happened to someone else and that everyone would think I was weak if I cried. As time passed I did not want to be in the bank I think my mind helped to make me sick with whatever illness was around, even pneumonia. For a long time I wanted to tell everyone I knew or didn't know what happened and I knew that everyone I did know was tired of hearing about it. I was off with my second shoulder surgery when my sister wrote about this book. I purchased it and began to read the most heart wrenching story of loss, courage, scarifice, empowerment, victory and strength. You put in words things that relate to a lot of us with different stories to tell even if they were not as traumatic as what you endured. You gave me courage to seek help to heal not only my body but my mind and to have courage to move forward. Thank you for sharing your most personal of stories and I say and extra thank you everyday for giving this gift of your book. I will tell everyone I know they should get this and feel your power.

I loved reading this book. Several nights I would go upstairs after work and read until it was time to go to bed. It was very hard to put down. I went to high school with Lynnie. My brother Charlie was in her class and I was a year older. I had a very abusive life with my father and thought I was the only one. I never knew what Lynnie had to endure with the trauma she had in her life. I always looked up to her and thought she had it all. She was very attractive and outgoing. I remember wishing I could be that outgoing with people. I admire her for all she's done and gone thru. I work as a Kindergarten assistant could relate to all of her situations in school. The book is a must read. I was amazed at her ability to cope with her situations. I've been telling everyone I know about the book. When it come out in paperback I plan to buy several copies as gifts for some of my friends. I'm very proud of Lynnie Vessels. Great book.

My father shot my mother. A little girl's life is defined by that statement. The episode appears to be swept under the rug by many of the people in her life. Lynnie can't shake it off. She vividly recalls some troubling moments from that night. There was much more than the one gunshot that bothers her about that evening.
The book focuses on her struggle with anger management and conflict resolution. A high school principal confronts her with the right words at the right time. Lynnie begins to channel her thoughts and energies in a positive direction. That is not the end of the book. There is no quick fix. She struggles for over twenty years to understand and improve her relationships with friends and family.
Lynnie bares her soul describing the long road she took to understand what happened to her the night that her father shot her mother and how it effects her in the present.
I attended the same high school as Lynnie. I did not know her but I knew who she was because she was a popular student. I am happy to know more about her thanks to this book. She made the uniforms for the entire cheerleading squad! That is just one of the many wonderful things about Lynnie that she shares in the book. I hope that many other Stuart High School Spartans will read the book.

To Soften The Blow is a must read book. Lynnie and I were not friends, but everyone knew her. I was so shocked by her story. We never really know what another person may be going through. Although I bought the book because I knew her and was friends with Judy, I soon realized this may be the best book I ever read.

There is something for everyone in this book. For those who have children, work with children, come from or live in abuse, adult children of alcoholics, if you have ever said a bad or hurtful thing to someone. I could go on and on.

This book definitely needs to be on paper so that everyone has access to it. I was touched by this book in more ways then one. Thank you so much Lynnie for finding the strength to tell your story. You are my angel!

I know Lynnie Vessels as a fellow student at a yoga center in Virginia. She is as intelligent, compassionate, and insightful in person as she comes across in her book. To Soften the Blow is a moving, very intimate account of her recovery from a traumatic childhood and a horrific act of domestic violence. She writes of her experience so others may benefit from her insights. One of the most striking observations comes about halfway through the book when Lynnie creates the metaphor of painful incidents from her past being dirty, slimy rocks at the bottom of her well. Getting past the pain meant picking up each rock, one at a time, and "scrubbing it clean". Although few of us have experienced the extreme trauma that she did, we all have dirty rocks sitting in our well. We can all benefits from Lynnie's insight and experience to scrub our own rocks clean.
