After researching GPS units for my Nikon 7000 I was pretty confused by the various claims made by manufacturers and the wide variation in unit costs. On-line tech equipment reviewers talked about camera battery drain, length of time to pick up a signal, and so on. Many of the reviewers' findings didn't match with the manufacturers claims. The Solmeta Geotagger N3 seemed to be the one unit where the reviewers consistently confirmed what the manufacturer claimed. The unit is a little on the pricey side but not too bad because it does what it claims. Picks up a signal pretty quickly and has a lot of features that reduce camera battery drain. The downside is you are ordering it from the manufacturer in China, via Amazon, so it adds to the shipping cost and may add a little complexity if you ever need to return it. I was especially pleased with the design of the cord, which does not get in the way and is unlikely to get snagged on something. MAKE SURE YOU ORDER THE RIGHT UNIT. There are at least two different "N3" units for Nikons. The N3-c is for the 7000 and certain others. So pay attention to which N3 applies to which Nikon model. If you order the wrong one the 90 degree plug that fits into the camera will come out pointing in the wrong direction (down instead of up).

I have tried two other GPS units for my camera, the GP1A from Nikon and the GPS-N from Micnova. Neither one of those was any good. They couldn't lock on to a position. This unit is much, much better. It can take a full minute to lock on, which seems like a long time when you are waiting to take a shot. It will lose the fix when you go in a building, and get spotty when going under heavy tree cover. Leaving it plugged in to your camera all day is not a substantial battery drain. It did cost more, but it worked, which made it worth while.

I can't be more happy about my choice that was the result of a long search on Internet. Solmeta product was getting one one website a very good review and I went with the Solmeta Geotagger N3. It seemed to be the best product available and fitting my need. I wanted one unit and not a GPS with a Bluethooth dongle on the camera.
The unit works flawless. Picking the GPS signal is quite quick. It is easy to use as what all what you need to do is to plug it and once it is ready, start shooting. When it takes a bit time, usually just snapping a picture gets the unit to sync. I have been using it since 3 months now in North America, Europe and Central America (can't wait to test it in Asia and Africa). It has been confronted to jungle, forest, mountains and also urban environment. to pick up location even in the middle of the jungle.
The battery consumption is higher than without. Yet, it took a whole day to deplete my 2 batteries (I have a grip), while it was on all day long from 9.00 am to 8.45pm, I snap more than 800 pictures, a good 50 being long exposure and using sometime the liveview mode.

I won't finish without mentioning that it arrived at least 2weeks earlier than planned and that was a real plus for me.

In general I liked it a lot. It was reasonably not horribly slow at a cold start and pretty blazing fast on a warm fix. It does burn some extra battery, so carry a spare, but it's really nice not to have to do any post processing to geotag pictures. It works fine on raw files and accuracy seems very high.

When the battery got low it wouldn't get a fix, but I suppose that's to be expected.

Well worth the money and probably about as good as you're going to get.

I use it on tropical drylands at 42 celsius degrees during 10 days without any problems. Accurate geoposition and fast lectures.
