'SPACE 1999' ran for 2 seasons (in syndication, unfortunately never picked-up by a Network)..... I vaguely recall seeing a few episodes as a grade-school kid in the 1970's...... but I think the episodes were sometimes shown at odd-hours on an uneven (and somewhat unpredictable schedule)...... it wasn't until re-issued (on video-tape and later DVD) beginning in the late-1990's that I was able to view most of the entire series.
The definite highpoints of 'SPACE 1999' (particularly in the 1st Season) were the fantastically imaginative and exceedingly futuristic conceptual designs for sets, costumes and especially the intricate spaceship/Starship models and realistic special-effects....... I recall reading that producer Gerry Anderson (of 'Thunderbirds' and 'UFO' fame) was able to secure a per-episode Budget (from British ITC's Lew Grade) that was the highest for any hour-long show of that time period...... and it is true that the futuristic sets and intricately-detailed models and special-effects appear very 'cinematic' (on many occasions seeming very reminiscent of Kubrick's '2001: Space Odyssey')..... the keyword here is 'Cinematic' in that 'Space1999' Episodes felt much more like mini theatrical Movies, as opposed to standard weekly 'TV' installments!
The cast was also Top-notch featuring Martin Landau, Barbara Bain, Nick Tate and Barry Morse (Season 2 included metamorph Catherine Schell)....... the stories from season one were also highly-imaginative + expansively delving into some serious speculative-fiction scenarios (that really made you think)........ but the primary critique of 'SPACE 1999' and the reason it probably never reached the level of popularity achieved by Gene Roddenberry's Classic 'Star Trek' is that the quality-consistency of 'SPACE 1999' stories & scriptwriting while maintaining a high-Level of imagination were sometimes uneven in terms of dramatic-dynamism (i.e. sometimes a bit Low on both energy & 'spark'...... still roughly half the season 1 episodes were worthwhile and exceedingly-unique, holding-up well even by today's standards!).
Season 2 was a bit lighter in tone, with more humor and action added (i.e. Season Two had Less of that brooding 'European' feel... but also less thought-provoking in substance)....... but Season 1 most definitely encompassed the much more original expansive + 'cerebral' Stories (and the more intensely 'realistic' atmosphere.....). Yes, 'SPACE 1999' could have been more consistently entertaining...... but in terms of imaginative speculative-scenarios & intriguingly futuristic-visualizations, it retains High-marks in the realm of mid-1970's television!
Some of the Best Season 1 Episodes of 'Space1999' (from standpoints of both intriguing Storyline & imaginative-Visuals) are listed as follows: "Mission of the Darians" "The Testament of Arcadia" "End of Eternity" "The Full Circle" "Earthbound" "Dragon's Domain" "The Last Enemy" "War Games" "The Infernal Machine" the superlative pilot "Breakaway" and visually-mesmerizing "Guardian of Piri"!!
The stories are unique and it is no wonder why today's shows take from series like this one. Watch Season 2 episode 24; see if you hear the line which was used in Star Trek Next Generation. Cannot wait for Season II to be released because what they did to enhance this series, the next will be worth the wait.
Again, the video and audio is fantastic and if your a fan you will just take that deep breath and say "finally".
Maybe someday they will release the second series...only been waiting about five years or so...
