As a lifeguard/swim instructor/coach of 20 years, I am super critical of flotation devices.
This is great! It supports the child & gives them freedom without feeling like they are being choked (standard life jackets) or falling off (water wings)
*stay with your child! They can still tip over or get a mouthful of water. Also, don't use it on small, under 30 lbs, children.
We had him swimming the length of the pool on his own after about 15 minutes with the Puddle Jumper! He even told me to stay away because he did not need any help- what a joy! Soft material eliminates chafing. Highly recommend this for beginners in this weight class. AND as a bonus, this is a certified life jacket for boating.
The first day in the pool with these on and the kids constantly wanted us to hold them and support them. After holding them by the hands and letting go a couple times, they realized they could float and kick their legs and could swim with a little supervision, but no intervention. It was by day 3 that I could sit outside the pool in a chair and watch them swim around. As long as the buckle strap is tightened to the proper waist size, the swimmer doesn't ride up enough so their heads stayed above water. I also took my son into the ocean until it was about 5 feet deep. He loves when the waves come crashing in. He stayed above the water with me just holding his hands. I got caught by surprise with a big wave, which pulled him out of my hands. He ate a little water, but when it settled, he was above it and fine. I can see why the coast guard approves this product. Now my kids don't get in the water without them and they wouldn't let me hold them much once they comfortably new they could swim/float on their own. I would highly recommend this product for peace of mind. I plan to get my use out of these during the winter at the indoor pool in the gym and for the start of swim lessons.
My daughter weighs about 36 lbs. and there seems to be about 4 more inches in the strap. My son weighs about 40 lbs. and there was at least 2 or 3 inches in the strap. It should be snug so as not to move a lot, but not too tight. The chest floaty wraps around the sides. The wings are easier to slide arms in dry than wet. They seemed real snug, which I suppose is how it should be. It never seemed uncomfortable for the kids, but I can't see how this fits any child past 42 - 45 lbs. Still, not all kids are created equal so keep that in mind. Some kids are just taller, but slender.
I rarely write reviews because I buy so much from Amazon and don't have the time, but this was worth recommending. It is a great product. Also, to save money, you can skip on the deluxe and buy the regular ones with the faces on them. My daughter didn't wear the ladybug in pink and yellow for a few days. She wanted the plain orange one my nephew had because she thought it was a crab. Weird, but it worked and fit the same. It just wasn't as decorative. Have fun!
