4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Good for 8,000 liters 18 de febrero de 2011

It is definitely larger than its battery powered siblings. The surprising downside is that it must be cranked for 180 revolutions at 120 rpms to make the green led light up telling you that you have purified one liter of water. I found it a workout for an old guy with a bad ticker, but its doable. The instructions are quite explicit if you are the sort of person who reads instructions. It has an internal counter that tells you when the bulb needs replacing. The generating mechanism needs to be kept dry and out of the dust and grit. The little prefilter in the bottle cover to clarify turbid water is ingenious, but finding a clean rag to wipe the threads off might be challenging in the field. Remember to replace the bulb protector sleeve before putting the thing away. The bulb looks fragile. This company has recently patented a UV LED process that should be the answer to all the world's problems. I should be content for the next 8'000 liters with the old technology.

I ordered this product because I plan to live in a developing country for at least 6 months - and instead of buying bottled water or boiling water, I figured this could be a useful way to get drinking water. I got the manual one because I've used the battery-operated steripens before and they eat through batteries relatively quickly.

The product arrived fine - it took me a bit of time to figure out how to assemble it (the filter part especially is a bit tricky) but I eventually got it to work. I've been using it for 3 weeks now, and it is a pretty awesome product. Getting the green light to come on actually takes more like 2 minutes of cycling rather than the 90 seconds specified in the manual which can get your arms pretty tired (just think of it as a mini-workout for your arms!), but I have not gotten sick and the bottle itself is a nice bottle to carry around (handle on the lid is convenient).

Pretty cool, does what it says. Worked down in the Grand Canon when we ran out of our FIJI water.

The side winder is a fantastic product. A purifier requiring no batteries that kills even viruses, something few others do. Its the details that make this purifier so great. A sensor only allows the light to function if there is water inside, another lets you know if you are cranking to slow and when you have purified the water. Even the crank can be folded into the body for a slimmer profile when stored away. The included prefilter for removing sediment and the ability to use the sidewinder with any wide mouth nalgene bottle make this the coolest piece of gear I am taking on my next trek.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Worked great, and is perfect for emergencies, and extended camping trips 18 de febrero de 2014

Who needs batteries. This has a built in generator to power the electronics, which is perfect for those times when you need sterilized water and need to save your batteries for other items (may it be while camping for extended time, or during emergencies). I purchased two of these and tested them both. They both worked without any issues.

As for the ability to crank these things for the 90 seconds, I had no issues. Let me tell you why...
At first, I cranked it as shown in the video. This would be with the crank on the side and my entire arm moving the crank (shoulder and elbow joints moving). This did become a bit tiresome quickly. Noticing this, I rotated the unit so that the crank was directly facing me. I then rotated the crank so that only my elbow join was moving. This was much easier to crank (using a stronger muscle) and I was easily able to finish cranking through the 90 seconds and also do another liter of water for another 90 seconds. For people struggling to crank through the 90 seconds, try rotating the unit and crank it from the end.

I recommend this to everyone.

Now my only small issue is that the bulb is good for 8000 usages, after which I cannot purchase replacement bulbs. The company will not sell them because they claim a special technician is required, so you must send the entire unit to them so they can replace it for you at $20 plus shipping (cost at the time of writing, may go up or down). I am an engineer/electrician for trade and am sure I can replace the bulb myself. Still, I cannot purchase the bulbs as they won't sell them to me. My guess is that they are holding onto an extra way to make more money.
