I read SF and thought I hated mysteries---but that was before I tried Vance's mysteries. If you enjoy his SF, then you'll enjoy his mysteries. They're very similar, only here the deadly monstrosities are human, which, in a way, is even more horrific.

This is a novel set in Italy, in Positano and around the Sorrento peninsula, doubtless after one of Vance's first foreign trips. I've been in the area and the scene appears to be pretty accurate, particularly for Positano. The main character is a drifting ex-soldier, given a job at an absurdly high salary. He soon realises that the scene is more complex and that the characters' motives are mixed at best. He soon becomes a target for everyone.
It is hard to compare the book with other authors; perhaps the best I can do is to is to say that it is like Fairbank with the gay and the glitter turned down. The book falls apart towards the end and is far from a masterpiece, but it shows the sort of thing Vance was trying during the early fifties when he wrote relatively little SF and less fantasy.

Well worth the price for the Vance fan.

Vance at his stylistic peak. He took me to the scene and kept me guessing
about what shock would come next right to the last page. A dark hero with
touches of Cudgel in the mix.
