Reseña del editor
From the New York Times bestselling author of It Happened One Wedding comes a novel about a man and a woman whose summer is about to get very, very hot...
Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn't mean she's opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford...
Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there's no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for...

Sexual situations may offend some readers.
After the first time they had sex, they went back to being 'blah' about each other (though each admitted the sex was good) didn't think about each other much, nor speak again for a few days. It was like, "oh, that was nice, now back to life". Turned me off.
This book just seemed very off in the romance department for me. I did not feel any chemistry between the two main characters, in truth, I was more interested in Nicole (the sister of the H) story. I wanted her to have a hea!
Sorry Ms. James, this one was cold for me.
Ford Dixon is an investigative journalist who's dealing with issues of his own. The recent loss of his father brings many of his hidden issues to surface. But without realizing it, he's given his new, single, traumatized female neighbor the wrong impression of himself...what with all the coming and going of various women from his apartment. And then (again without realizing it), he causes her to prejudge him, not only as a whoring playboy, but also as inconsiderate and rude when he begins refurbishing and repairing parts of his apt. Needless to say, they get off on the wrong foot and are not friends.
I enjoyed this story. The main characters were likable and strong...easy to relate to and quickly connect with. I loved Victoria's sassy, sarcastic, quick wit. It was so much fun to watch the moments turn from irritating and intolerable to occasionally funny and not quite so intolerable. Ms. James slowly begins to turn their dislike of each other to garnering smiles and second looks...and then looks that being lasting longer. I loved how Ms. James brings our two angry protagonists to work together for the benefit of one other. Victoria is like a tiger lady in court. She's a very successful divorce lawyer in high demand and while she's doing her "schtick" and being her fabulous lawyer self in divorce court, Ford is tearing up the Chicago Tribune and making front page stories. But then they need the help of the other and while they're both circling each other on a mutual case, their push/pull tango reaches crescendoing heights. It was pretty great. Victoria desperately hides her vulnerabilities perceiving them as weakness. She's snarky, but it isn't over the top. The intimate moments are conveyed maturely and tastefully. The adult language is kept at an extreme low. The sex and heat doesn't overpower the wonderful story. The downside for me was how slowly they work through their issues before they finally find happiness...which brings the story to an end. Maybe I just wanted them to hurry up and "see" each other, lol. Ms. James brings about all this wonderful controversy, then uses the majority of the book to draw it out to a quick culmination. It might have been that I just wasn't ready to let these two fabulous characters go. :)
Because you find someone who's worth facing your deepest fears for."
Another great book by Julie James with an interesting plot, great characters and witty dialogue.
I was excited for this book since it was announced and most because Brooke's friend Ford seemed to be a complex and fun character and that's how he was on this book as well. He's a career man, working for the Chicago Tribune as an investigative reporter - he doesn't shy away from any 'case' and is always trying to uncover new wrong doings. Then one summer night he meets his new neighbor Victoria 'the divorce lawyer' and what starts off as teasing in the end transforms into an incredible friendship and later love.
I love the secondary plot for this book - although this is mainly a romance novel, the main characters are working on a case - finding Ford's sister's baby daddy. It was interesting to see them interact in a different environment other than the bedroom - that's one thing I LOVE about Julie James's books - they are character oriented, with amazing character development - it's not all about the sex or the hotness level - it's about the lives of her heroes and heroines, about their pasts and how those influenced their growth, it's about friendships, old and new ones and all this is entwined with great suspense elements - all this is making me feel like I'm part of the FBI/ US attorney gang.
I recommend her books to anyone looking for tough, likable and capable heroines and smooth talking, smart and funny heroes.
