I purchased two sets of these towels and immediately washed them using the above method. Because they were so absorbent I used about 1/2 gallon of white vinegar poured directly in to the tub on my front loader. I then ran them a second time using Tide to get the vinegar smell out. They don't smell and they are the most absorbent towels I have ever purchased. I am about to buy two more sets for our guest bath.
I didn't rate them with 5 stars becasue they could be softer. My brother (who has a lot more money than I have) purchased towels from Frontgate. They are just as thick and absorbent, but much softer (also much more expensive).
I ordered three sets of these towels. Two of them came in today. The first was the Latte and Cream colors. The boxes were in good condition but I knew something was wrong before I opened boxes because they didn't feel like the same weight. When I opened them it was obviously incorrect! The latte set is beautiful and plush and appear to be well made. The cream set is a joke. Before opening the package I looked and it says cloud 9 but they have added a printed label in the corner saying it was the Superior 900 Gram Egyptian Cotton 6 piece towel set .... I have taken pics to show the outright misrepresentation. Not only are they not even the right sizes, the product itself gave it away as it is CHEAP and thread bare. I have even shown pics where the washcloths state they are not what I ordered! They relabeled this package and I guess they thought I would be stupid enough to not notice Newsflash! I noticed and am now processing my very first RETURN on Amazon.
I love the towels that I actually ordered and hope that when my third set arrives tomorrow that they are correct!
I do not like the plastic bar code tag that is attached on the items though - it is a little difficult to cut off close to edge without damaging the product. Take you time when removing them.
As far as the smell others have mentioned - Yes it is present. What other reviewers may not be aware of is that this is a chemical that is added to prevent insect damage to the towels while they are in storage/transit. Who wants to buy towels that are carrying insect larvae, or any type of moth that eats Keratin. They may smell when received but it is something that can be washed off quite easily. I would rather deal with the smell than introduce cloth eating insects into my home.
These are not "pre-washed" so expect a little lint the first two to three wash/dry cycles.
You are paying a reasonable price for a quality Towel Set; but without the fancy packaging, pre-washing or high price.
Additional color options would be "icing on the cake".
Wash them delicately and dry them with low heat and they will not shrink or ravel.
Wash them with a minimal amount of detergent to prevent soap buildup, since this makes the fabric rough.
They should last quite a long time.
Hand towels: also quite large, about 30% wider/longer than my other standard hand towels.
Wash rags: a little bigger than normal, but fairly standard.
Texture: THICK. These towels are heavy and thick. If you have weak arms (children or the elderly) you probably won't care for the weighty nature of these towels, but they do dry you off super fast. They're softer than most towels, but not the silkiest. I give the feel a 4/5.
How do they wash?
In warm water, these do not shrink. My washer doesn't get genuinely hot, but I imagine they might shrink a little over time if yours does. The binding and the decorative strip stay the same width as when they were new, so you don't get towels with wobbly or narrow ends and fat middles.
I washed a set of 6 towels, 2 hand towels, and 2 wash rags and only needed to trim 2 pulled-out loops. I've washed them several times since and none of the loops have snagged or needed trimming.
I don't use fabric softener on towels since it makes them repel water (Soft towels that don't get you dry? No thanks!), but these are still quite soft and feel good on the skin. They absorb water like crazy and barely feel damp. They dry quickly too.
UPDATE: This morning, my husband was getting ready for his shower and found that the bath towel was already unraveling. We just got these at the end of March 2015 and it's only May 29. We've only had these two months.
