My Dear Catherine: Emerging from the Mojave Desert, we found ourselves in the midst of fruits and flowers, in Los Angeles, which place we had heard was the acme of everything horrible, but which we find quite the contrary. We drove immediately from the station to the St. Elmo hotel, where we had a very nice breakfast, beginning with strawberries and oranges; the oranges were equal to some we had once at the Colonnade Hotel in Philadelphia, and those I have always thought the most delicious I ever tasted. Soon after breakfast, we started in a cablecar to see the city. I never imagined such flowers as we saw. Houses covered with roses! and hedges of calla lilies, white with blossoms, which apparently were very common. We called on Rev. Mr. Brown, who had one of these hedges about his house. He told us that all the callas had been picked to decorate his church at Easter, but in two or three weeks the hedge would again be loaded with blossoms. He showed us a photograph of the church, in its Easter decorations, and the chancel was one mass of callas, which he said were brought by the cart-load. One gentleman, out of curiosity, began to count the lilies, but when he reached five thousand he thought that he would stop. From January to December, flowers bloom constantly in the open air, while fresh fruits and vegetables are supplied every month in the year. Yesterday we took a beautiful drive of thirty-five miles to Pasadena, and the surrounding places, through orange and lemon groves. We lunched at the Sierra Madre Villa, where we spent seveial hours, in walking about the place; here grow lime, walnut and olive trees, pomegranates and flowers in abundance, and we picked as many of the flowers as we wanted.
