"Richly imbued with a deliciously dry sense of humor and graced with a striking cast of characters, the latest impeccably researched Regency romance by RITA Award winner Hunter is a masterpiece of wit and passion." ---Booklist Starred Review

Descripción del producto

A woman running a prestigious London auction house? Preposterous! But that is exactly what Emma Fairbourne intends to do when her father dies, leaving her the reins of this fabulous enterprise.  Of course, she is not addlepated enough to do this openly and scare away her wealthy collectors.  So she and her friend concoct a deception, hiring a handsome and charming front man who will do her bidding...
All would have proceeded smoothly--if it weren't for the maddening interference of Darius, the arrogant Earl of Southwaite, who has been her father's "silent partner" and now shares ownership of Fairbourne's.  An earl, of course, has no interest in running an auction house--and Darius is certainly not interested in allowing the lovely Miss Fairbourne to run it either, her ludicrous scheme notwithstanding.  Clearly the business must be sold.
But the headstrong Emma is like no other lady he has ever encountered, refusing to follow his dictates.  Holding his temper in check, Darius decides to attack on a different front.  There is another way to achieve her surrender, one far more pleasurable for both of them...

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas The summary held me back but I`m glad I bought it 12 de marzo de 2012

There was something about the summary that made me click away every time Amazon suggested I buy this book. I guess it was the whole smuggler story or maybe it just seemed like a boring story.

But then I noticed Old Latin Teacher had recommended the book and since her recommendations have given me so many great books up until now, I gave this one a try too. I`m so glad I did (thank you, OLT).

What I really enjoyed about this book - and what will have me buy more of Madeline Hunters books - was how she let love grow slowly. I dislike books where the hero and the heroine fall instantly in love and you have a full book with both of them pining for the other one. I also enjoyed how she let the hero and the heroine get slowly adjusted to each other. They had plenty of things working against them and it would have been entirely incredible if they`d fallen into each other`s arms on page three.

The book was very well written and the characters and situations were credible. There were a lot of emotions in this book but Madeline Hunter showed them in a very clever way which made it all the more lovely to read.

Both hero and heroine were lovable and annoying in just that perfect mixture that makes you want to see things end well for them but you`re not on a sugary overdose after two chapters.

In a world of very predictable and boring historical romances this book offered me something else - something more. I`m glad I found a new author to read because I was afraid I`d run out of good historical romances - having read so many inferior ones lately.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Smart, compelling romance between two strong leads 12 de marzo de 2012
Por Fan of Romance - Publicado en

Rare novel where the hero and heroine have believable reasons to initially interact with each other. Emma Fairbourne and Darius Alfreton, Earl of Southwaite, circle each other warily over the Fairbourne Auction House where they have recently become co-owners, due to the recent death of Emma's father. There are sparks of conflict over important business matters, a mystery surrounding Emma's father's past dealings, and a simmering attraction that evolves into a deeper love affair in this smart, sexy romance. Madeline Hunter is a strong writer, and her lead characters feel genuine in their actions and dialogue. While I see some mixed reviews here for this novel, I have to say that "I felt the romance" and look forward to additional installments in this series.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Finally a new HR release that's just the way I like them. 7 de marzo de 2012
Por OLT - Publicado en
Formato: Libro de bolsillo
It's the late Georgian period in England. Emma Fairbourne's father, owner of a well-regarded auction house, has died. Emma's brother Robert, her father's heir, is believed to have drowned in a shipwreck some time ago, so it's up to Emma to keep the auction house afloat. But she's a woman and it's 1798. No one would have any confidence in a business run by a female.

In addition, Darius, Earl of Southwaite, who has been a "silent partner" in the business, now wants Emma to sell it and live off funds invested after the sale. That's what women are supposed to do. They're not supposed to work. But convincing Emma of this will be easier said than done.

Between Darius and Emma there's not just the clash of wills about the auction house, there's also some great sexual tension and attraction, which Emma in particular needs to fight. She must not surrender to Darius' will, in or out of bed. Emma is a great heroine, with just the right amount of gumption, willing to stand up for what she thinks is necessary.

This is an excellent HR, with an interesting and complex storyline, with spies, smugglers, the question of the exact circumstances of Emma's father's death, and the mystery of Emma's brother. Did Robert drown or is he still alive? What all was Emma's father involved in before his unexpected death? Can Emma find the answers to these questions? And can she save the auction house?

Hunter gives us this very enjoyable story and, in addition, her trademark great romance between a rather autocratic (but hunky) hero and a heroine with a backbone and intelligence. Her heroines sometimes can become a bit weak when around the overly strong hero, but Emma here manages to hold her own and confound Darius often. This is the best HR I've read in months.

Be on the lookout for #2 in this Fairbourne Quartet, The Conquest of Lady Cassandra, which will be released in October of 2012. Cassandra is the rather scandalous daughter of a peer and is best friends with Emma. Their relationship in Emma's story is lovely to read and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to Cassandra in the sequel.

BTW, Hunter puts to great use her Ph.D. in Art History in this HR, with references to famous painters of the time period whose works are being auctioned off at Fairbourne's. This is, as I said, a very complete and satisfying read.

5.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Very Original Plot-Great Dialogue 7 de marzo de 2013
Por Book Maven - Publicado en

Emma Fairbourne's father has just passed away. Her brother has disappeared and is presumed dead by most. However, Emma believes he is still alive, and her father's business, Fairbourne Auction House, a rival to Christie's Auction, must be preserved to be passed to her brother in case he does return. It is unheard of that a woman would run an auction, but Emma believes she has no choice. Besides, it is her only means of support, also. She is barely able to pull an auction together in order to pay the bills, and she just found out that her father had a silent partner, Darius, Earl of Southwaite. The Earl does not believe Emma, being a woman, can keep the business profitable, so he wants Fairbourne's sold at once. He also has reason to think that the circumstances of Emma's Father's death might bring scandal that would further devalue the business. He believes that a quick sale is the only way to preserve any assets for Emma and himself. This ongoing disagreement brings romance, danger, mystery, and love as secrets and mysteries unfold. Madeline Hunter can always be counted on to bring us an excellently written story and the plot of this book is especially unique and original. The mystery of Emma's father's death and her brother's disappearance keeps one guessing until the very end. The love scenes are romantic and steamy. The characters are truly people you can believe in. The conversations between the characters make you wish these people were coming over tonite. I really enjoyed every page. And the very interesting secondary characters made me buy the next book in the series within five minutes of finishng the book. Kindle is the greatest invention ever!!!

3.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Not So Much A Surrender From Her But From Him 28 de marzo de 2012
Por Brandie Spencer - Publicado en
Formato: Libro de bolsillo
Madeline Hunter understands the formula of couplehood and does a fine job of it in this latest book. She always captures the struggle and humor of a new relationship with an eloquent pen. While the title says one thing; I believe it is the Earl who does the surrendering and is a real hero in doing so. While this book does not have the same romantic and steamy feel of some of her other books it is good and well worth the copy. I look forward to more from this author and highly recommend her previous titles.
