I am used to sleeping on a coleman 10" air mattress. It's my one splurge, not touching the ground to sleep. However, the husband loves sleeping on a thin thermarest mattress, says air mattresses make him sea-sick. With about 8 inches height between us, we couldn't cuddle. Which we really missed.
So i bit the bullet and ordered this one as a possible compromise. And to make sure I could survive a night on the ground, i stuck a dog bone under the mattress before i laid down in my apartment. A hard, nobby, 4x1" dog bone right were the hips will lay. I swear it disappeared under me. So just to make sure, i called the hubby over and had him lay down without telling him about the dog bone still under the mattress. He loved it too. Said it was so comfortable and didn't make him seasick. Then i told him about the bone and he was amazed.
Two of these makes for a very happy camping couple.
I spent 3 weeks traveling across the country spending half the time camping and this mat was comfortable and warm every single time. Then once I got where I was going I slept on it for over a month until the mattress I bought arrived. I can say without a doubt that for a camping mat it does not get much better than this. It is easy to blow up, It insulates you from the ground very well. The coldest I slept in was low 40's and it was never cold. Of course the sleeping bag helped.
My girlfriend Liked mine so much she ordered the XXL, I have the large. In a mummy bag the large is big enough because you can't move around much. In a regular bag.. Just get the XXL.
The storage bag is pretty flimsy. I would have liked to see something more substantial. I tore the handle off the end of the bag on one of our mats trying to get the mat out. Perhaps they wanted to save weight but lets be honest if you are backpacking you are not likely to pick this mat in the first place.
It is recommended you store it in the inflated position so that it retains its shape better and inflates faster. So it takes up a-lot of room in storage if you follow those directions.
After spending 3 weeks road tripping it getting stuffed into my jeep and then serving as my primary sleeping accomodations for the next month straight it has developed a leak somewhere. A small leak. I do have the patch kit, but for the price I wish it were more durable. I am always afraid I am going to poke a hole in it.
Pros- Best sleep you will have camping. Warm. Lightweight and easy to pack (relatively) Easy to inflate.
Cons- Pricey, Somewhat fragile, Takes up alot of room when stored properly.
Final thoughts- For goodness sake spend the money for a good mat because you will wonder why you ever spent so many nights on a blowup mattress or this foam pad.
5/5/15 - Still love this pad. Still looking for a good stuff sack. I just bought the Thermarest 36L stuff sack. Big improvement over the one they send with the pad. This one might last a while. It's a pretty tight fit though so be prepared to wrestle with the Mondoking to get it in there.
(Best for family camping, sort of big for backpacking.)
