1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas very poorly designed 4 de septiembre de 2010

How I wish I had followed the first reviewer's recommendation not to purchase this product!!

The Rock and Roll Quarry Set has several design flaws that significantly detract from the value. First, it is set up in such a way that the train goes down the hill with the curved side of the tracks at the bottom thus causing it to derail. I added tracks to both ends, but you have to lift the train off the Quarry tracks in order to leave its circle. One can, again, lift the train to place it so it goes up the hill on the left (curved) side and can go down the hill onto the straight tracks I added to the set. There is no way this can be done without lifting the train off the tracks.

The hill should have a tunnel cut out of it so the train could at least go around the Quarry track without the the Quarry Ramp. Instead, the child is frustrated as the train runs into a wall.

Most of the time the "boulder" does not land in the cargo bin, but stops at the lip.

If the boulder is in the cargo car, it doesn't fit under the Maithwaite Station from the Roundabout Set - further frustrating play.

The crane constantly separates from the base as the child operates it.

Once the hill is snapped onto the base it can't be removed (unless to break it).

I purchased the Rock and Roll Quarry for $39.95, plus tax. However, it's not something my 22-month old nephew can really play with due to all the flaws. It frustrated me let alone a young toddler. I wish I had spent the extra $10 to purchase the Busy Day on Sodor Early Engineers set.

1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas Don't waste your money on this poorly designed Thomas product 21 de agosto de 2010

This is the worst designed product for children that I've ever purchased. Unfortunately "Learning Curve" released a product that DOES NOT WORK!!!

On the surface this appears to be a great addition to your "Learning Curve" Thomas play set. That illusion ends as soon as you insert this product into a loop of wooden track. You quickly learn that, once a car enters one quarry connection point it cannot exit but can only continue forward by going around (and around, and around, ...) the small play set loop.

Think of an automobile traffic circle that has two roads entering it and ZERO roads exiting.

In theory, this is an exceptional toy for this age group, and a great introduction into the "bigger kid" Thomas trains and tracks. I bought this with much excitement and anticipation for my 20 month old. He loves to play with it, but becomes frustrated with the poor design and things not working as they should.

First, the crane comes out of its holes VERY easily, so the least little pressure from tiny, non-delicate hands tears it from its base, causing frustration.

Second, the quarry piece is designed so that the train cannot utilize the part of the track it covers. In my mind, these little engineers want to see the train/cart go around the track and this is not possible due to a poor design.

Third, the yellow roundabout that goes up to catch the "boulder" does not fit snugly into the quarry piece and comes dislodged, again, with the least little pressure. This piece also does not line up with the wooden tracks and ALWAYS causes the train to crash off the wooden track at the bottom.

There are a few other irritating little things that could have been done a whole lot better if more careful thought was put into this design. Great in theory, frustrating in play.

My son loves this set and spends more time playing with it than I've ever seen him do with anything. So the train can't go behind the ramp and if you take the ramp off, there is no way to circle. Don't all train tracks come to an end at some point? Also, yes the train derails if you allow it to just fly down the ramp but it can be solved in one of two ways: guiding it with your hand or putting it back on the track once it has derailed. My son enjoys this set but I must say we did buy it along with The Early Engineers Round About Station. For the price, I'd say give this set a shot but you probably will want to buy another set or track expansions with it. We had originally bought The Misty Island track set which is for ages 3+ and my son is almost 2. This set was much more age appropriate. Also, yes the pieces (i.e. the crane, ramp) do come off but I think that's all part of the appeal to a toddler. My son enjoys taking them off and putting them back in place. This set also has a magnetic crane with two magnetic boulders that really keeps his interest. We really have no complaints.

I bought this at a retail store on a whim, for a Christmas gift. My 3 & 5 year olds play with their Thomas trains every day, and their 10 month old brother is already trying to pull up to the train table to play too! I knew the older kids would LOVE the boulder feature as well as the big ramp, and figured it would be nice to have some of this Little Engineers line for the baby as he gets older. WELL - this thing is pretty much junk. It's super cute, but super frustrating. The stupid mountain covers up the track! It looks like an afterthought and they just grabbed an older version of track and rigged it up with a hill so they could sell more, even though it doesn't work. The crane comes out even with very gentle play. The boulders don't fall into the bucket like they're supposed to. The ramp constantly pops out of the place. The hill is too steep for the engines to stay on the track. We have to physically pick up the trains off the track because it constantly derails, and there is no where else to go once they drive in. Really stupid.
