Tibetan Yoga of Movement introduces the method of Yantra Yoga, a traditional Tibetan form that is one of the oldest recorded systems of yoga in the world. Derived from an eighth-century Tibetan Buddhist text, Yantra Yoga includes many positions similar to those of Hatha Yoga in form, but different in the dynamics of the way in which they are practiced, especially in the coordination of movement and breathing. The new book gives a much clearer, better-illustrated, and comprehensive explanation of the 25 basic yantras. What is particularly useful are the various tips and suggestions the authors make about adapting the yantra to your physical limits (weight, age, stiffness, etc.) so that you are able to practice the yantra and obtain the benefits (which are every real and which manifest themselves very quickly) without feeling that your opractice is somehow inferior or incomplete, or just not as good as the much younger and more limber models whose photographs appear in the book.
I would recommend using this book with the DVD sets, as it is a bit difficult to actually receive instruction in these yantra from one of Namkhai Norbu's teachers.
If you are NOT a solid hatha yoga student (or instructor!) you'd be better off with Kum Nye, or chi kung, or tai chi, etc., in terms of some energetic body work (and awareness work) that isn't going to stress ligaments. This book presupposes an extraordinary level of flexibility or a commitment to achieving such flexibility. In Berkeley at the Dzogchen Community practice sessions there are work-arounds for lack of flexibility, but those of us who lack it hang around more for the uplifting atmosphere than to attain the real benefits this system can deliver. YMMV, but go gentle on your joints if begin this body/mind work.
Also, there are DVD's which you will absolutely, positively need to master the Yantra-specific wrinkles of what looks like bread and butter hatha yoga. However, initiation and lineage issues aside, I think any solid hatha yoga student or instructor will easily master Yantra from a combination of this book and the DVD's, if they are patient and determined. All for a total cost much less than a weekend seminar at any yoga school.
