Aside from those negatives, this is a great unit. The navigation is good and the lane helper works quite well. It should be able to get you where you want to go.
The 5" screen is easy to see and has a great deal of information displayed including - your current speed, distance to the next turn, direction of the next turn, current time, estimated time you will arrive, minutes left until you arrive...
This GPS locates satellites quickly without having direct line-of-sight with the window and it is very fast when recalculating after a missed turn, also the volume adjusts automatically based off your current speed. The only problem I have is that the lane assist doesn't show very frequently on a good number of my local highways (Route 8, Route 25, etc.. in CT) which I am surprised at since these are major roads with as many as 6 lanes at some points, it does however show on I-95.
After having this GPS for a few years now I'd have to say don't waste your money. Navigation isn't accurate (i.e. the car's position on the map is deceiving and I often miss turns.), Traffic information is horrible if it even exists at all (which it doesn't most of the time) and it now takes forever to lock on to satellites (2 to 5 minutes). In addition I now have a strip of dead pixels running down my screen, even though it has never been dropped, banged or bruised (it has been living quietly in my glove compartment).
I used the Amazon "call me" service, they called instantly and the operator was friendly and helpful. Since it was bought from Amazon, and not an Amazon vendor, they upgraded my replacement shipping to come overnight, which is great because I leave for a trip in a few days. I am now waiting for the replacement. Hopefully it loads and works as good as the first, but this time comes with the activation code. Very happy with the customer service I recieved from both TomTom and Amazon.
UPDATE: I took the unit on a two week vacation to Southern California. IT WORKED GREAT!! The traffic feature worked fantastic, and saved us lots of time sitting in traffic. It would tell us how long our current delay was, and then ask us if we wanted to take a shorter route. Again, It worked great. Also, the directions were spot on, and the POI feature was wonderful. We downloaded the "In N Out" POI feature, and my kids got their fill whenever we were close to one at dinner time.LOL. I can't say enough good things about the unit. On our way home we stopped at a rest area (which is another POI find option)and there was an older gentleman that had locked his keys in his car. We pressed the help me function, and got the info and phone # for the closest police station. We called them, and they sent someone over to help him out. Again, I can't say enough good things about the unit.. Very happy with my purchase.
different and more informative map views
current speed versus posted limit with alarms for going 5 over
And a few more.
What I don't like:
Several times I was driving in circles.
Failure to provide accurate distance to turn.
While the TomTom gives you lots of warnings and good ones on the highway, it misses in the city. Twice the unit told me I had 70 yards to my turn but in reality it was right there. The lights in cities are often close and many times streets are not easily identified. OK if you're in a car and you have to u-turn but I had a 30 ft gooseneck behind my PU. Not easy to go back
Poor destination announcement.
OK to tell me I have arrived at my destination (often falls short of the real destination)but is it ahead, on right, or left. A real problem with that trailer when looking for a restaurant and it tells you have arrived at your destination and you are surrounded by nothing but shopping centers. Not fun to search with that rig.
Poor menu navigation.
Not easy to get all menus and some are not intuitive. Garmin is much easier. But one thing, address entry is easier. The touch screen is touchy though.
Would I buy it again - I only bought it this time because it was 60% off. Even at that I wouldn't do it again. I'd rather have the Garmin back but the wife won't give it up
