My knees are getting bad anyway and my right one is especially tender. I have had some minor surgery on it (you get the idea). I strapped these on as I was working on an outboard motor in my garage. I saw that I would be kneeling on the concrete floor and typically that is impossible for me without some heavy pads laid out in the area. Until now.
WOW! - I am impressed.
Kneeling with these pads on, is as if you are kneeling on a firm mattress (inside). No pressure is transferred through to your knees as they remain totally "cushioned" and the protection remains in-place throughout the tasks being performed. The outside shell is firm and hard enough to maintain its flat rigidity and gives you a very confident fit "feeling". I don't even remember I have them on, for most of the time.
Prior to using the pads - I was so use to kneeling down carefully and slowly - dreading it all the way. I habitually crouched one leg at a time, cringing with the anticipation for pain or discomfort.
Velcro straps (top/bottom laterally configured) hold them firmly in place.
Cushioning is excellent and totally protects even sensitive knees
Outer shells are plenty durable - don't seem to be prone to cracking or distortion from flexing.
The pads are very light, not sensed as "armored gear" or impeding to normal walking.
Knee cap and lower knee are both protected by 2- panel configuration that flexes with knee bends.
I limited my rating to 4 stars only because I have not had them long enough to assess longevity as yet. But these pads are as good as I could imagine so far and I recommend them to anyone and everyone.
But for a cheapie kneepad that you can use for a while (it lasted 2 months of 16 hours a week wear), it's pretty darn good. It has a cheap foam pad under a thick soft plastic shell that has a flat surface, so when you kneel on them they stabilize your knees. You could probably get your own foam pad and sew it in when the foam in here flattens out.
One of my gardening employees could not get used to them, but I have knee problems and I actually really liked the flat shell - it kept my kneepads from shifting because every time I kneeled, they'd align to the front again because of the flat front, and also kept my knees stabilized well so I didn't twist my knees in a way that hurt.
You should also know that there's only one strap which attaches below the knee, and it's of low quality but does have elastic so it stretches a bit.
These are good kneepads if you garden or kneel on floors or concrete paths and don't need them to hold up forever. The strength of them to me is that I could try out the flat shell front on a cheap kneepad before spending $40 on some keepers.
I've taken them off two separate times because the annoyance of kneeling in dirt was less worrisome than the pain from these pads.
Would not buy again.
They're lightweight and comfortable to wear, nice to walk around in, and quick and easy to put on and take off.
Indeed, they're so lightweight that I questioned their durability when they first arrived. But after two months of hard, almost daily use in dirt, mud, and gravel, they have held up amazingly well. They're not quite as pretty now, but functionally they're as good as new.
Update 5/24/16: They are still going strong after a year and a half of hard use. Very pleased.
