I purchased this portable HDD (320GB Version) about two months ago in order to store all of my work related files and references since I am frequently moving and rarely use the same computer for any length of time. I had been looking for a semi-rugged portable drive for quite some time, but happened on this one by chance and ended up buying it. As I have not used this drive for a significant length of time I cannot comment as to its durability yet, so I will instead give my initial impressions and update later with durability/reliability comments as necessary.

Rather than run off at the mouth about all sorts of nonsense, I will simply address what I consider to be selling points or potential hang-ups for someone who is doing some research and comparison shopping like I was before I decided on this one.

Fit and finish are excellent - It feels very well put together and extremely solid. Based on the weight and tactile feel of the HDD it feels like it will live up the advertised MIL-STD-810F (drop test). This standard is one of the reasons I chose this drive as I do a lot of moving around and don't tend to be gentle with equipment. It's obviously no Toughbook, but it's held up fine so far and for what it is and the price I feel it will be rugged enough for me.

Compact size - I am used to a desktop external HDD, so going from that to any portable drive is going to be a big difference. It is larger than some of the more compact portable HDDs, such as the Seagate and Western Digital portables, but not excessively so. For me it is worth the slight trade off in size for the drop protection and the price.

Ease of use - Plug and play, no problems at all. The included Y USB is a thoughtful touch, but I have had no problems thus far using it with a standard USB with several different computers and USB ports.

Software - The only negative reviews of this drive cite the included software as the reason for the negative review. I have not used the software so I cannot comment on it, but what can you really expect? I purchased a portable Hard Drive, not backup software; if the data you are backing up is that important you should probably be purchasing actual back-up software.

Bottom line, this is a great drive for the money, end of story.

UPDATE:
I have been using this External HDD for around a year or so with zero issues thus far. I have been carrying it with me almost daily and used it on a variety of computers with good results. Still no need for the "Y" USB cable, though the thought is nice. I finally purchased a netbook to replace my aging laptop and have been carrying this HDD around in my computer bag for the last couple of months. Not a horribly abusive environment, to be sure, but the HDD has handled it well. The torture test will come later this summer when I deploy to Afghanistan and will be spending 6+ months living out of a tent. I'll update again once I get back.

UPDATE II:
Copy/pasted from a post in the comments, here is my post-deployment update for ease of access:

I am back, thanks for asking! I was deployed to Helmand province from Sept 2010 to April 2011. I used this HDD almost daily with no problems. Pervasive dust and dirt, cold and damp in the winter. Still very happy with its performance, though to be 100% honest I did keep it in a pelican case when I wasn't using it. The 320 GB capacity of mine is getting dated and I did purchase another desktop external while there, but I'm sure a new higher capacity Transcend would perform just as well. Let me know if you have any other questions!

UPDATE III (3/12/13):
This will most likely be my final update for this review. The drive continues to hold up well to regular use, though the capacity is definitely well below today's standards (mine is the 320GB version). I do have one more interesting thing to note: I let my curiousity get the better of me a few weeks ago and decided to take a look inside and see how this drive is put together. I was pleasently surprised to discover that it utilizes a standard 2.5" drive - all of the anti-shock characteristics come from the case around it. This is one of the reasons that this external is so big, but also means that any standard 2.5" HDD will fit and gain you the anti-shock properties that are the selling point for this item. When I eventually find myself with the need for more portable storage I plan to purchase a "naked" standard HDD, stick it in this case, and have the best of both worlds.

4.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas A well made portable drive for both Mac and PC 13 de agosto de 2011

This is a well made drive that functions as advertised and, unlike some other portable hard drives from bigger names that have developed problems after a few months, my 500gb drive has been going strong for a year with no glitches. I'm using it on both a Mac laptop and a PC laptop with no problems at all. There are bigger and faster drives out there now and I'm surprised Transcend hasn't kept up with the times - the drive no longer represents quite the value it did a year ago, but it is an excellent drive. It comes with backup software but like most software included by drive manufacturers, it is a poor compromise at best. I reformatted the drive to remove all the included software - I use backup solutions from other providers. Some reviewers have totally missed the point of the included cable. Yes, the cable includes two USB plugs but it's not mandatory to use both. The secondary USB plug (on the thinner cable) is there to allow the drive to be used on mostly older or very small laptops that do not provide enough power through a single USB jack to run the drive. For most users, it will require only a single USB jack. It's a solid drive.

Just a further note two years on - this drive still performs flawlessly. It's held up to constant travel and heavy usage without a hiccup of any sort. I remain very happy with my purchase

I purchased this several years ago, and it was wonderful while I had it. I know I’m a bit late on the review, but I have just now started going back and reviewing products I’ve been purchasing over the years. This worked really well with my (then) crappy laptop that was something like 200 gb. I added photographs, music, etc.

I say “while I had it” because as I was moving out of my old apartment, I was backing up the photos from my computer onto this drive in my home, and I drove off to drop boxes off in my new place. But when I came back, both my computer and drive had been stolen. And this computer was the first I ever got, back in 2007 (so it was 4 years old when it was stolen). It’s very depressing to talk about, since I had something like 200 GB of old photographs from when I was in High School and college, and lots of videos and memories… And then the leaser refused to believe it was his handyman who stole it, when he was the only one on the property at the time of the theft. I also lived something like 2 blocks from the road, down a gravel drive way, so I find it really hard to believe that some kid randomly decided to trek down my driveway in the 45 minutes I was gone…. Anyways, I OBVIOUSLY DIGRESS.

I dropped this thing several times on a few different surfaces. Carpet, tile, and stone. And while I wouldn’t recommend you do any of those on purpose, it was completely fine after each drop. In fact, for my current computer, the only reason I didn’t get this product again was because I needed an immediate drive and had to go to the store to purchase the drive I use now. But you better believe, I would go back to this company in a heartbeat. The products are sturdy, reliable, and great for the accident prone.

I have used this for a long time now, constantly carrying it around the house, traveling with it, moving it everywhere. It has been great! I have not had a problem with it yet. I think I even dropped it once, not far, on carpet. But I didn't worry too much, knowing it was more protected than anything else I had. It is great. I does not require an external power adapter, works of your computer USB when plugged in. The button lights up while accessing the hard drive so you can see it is on. My various computers recognize it immediately when attached. I wouldn't trade it for anything, except maybe a solid state disc-don't know, haven't used one.

I use it on 2 of my laptops, 3 different desktops, family's computers while visiting. I move it all over the house, travel with it, and right now have it sitting on the end table next to my recliner so I can use it to plug into my laptop when I find something online I want to save, or am doing work that I want to save externally.

I originally bought this to take with me while shooting photographs on location. I thought with all the travel and moving around, there were bound to be some bumps, bangs, and drops. Yeah, well, no problem with this Transcend StoreJet. It has been handy for storing photographs on and then transporting to another computer to work with them-perfect for that for me. I'd buy another one in a heart beat if I needed one.

PROS
- Y cable included; didn't need the extra power on any of my usb ports
- rubber exterior is easy to hold onto

CONS
- drive suddenly failed after only 1 year of average use

This external HDD worked good for about 1 year and then suddenly failed.
I never treated this drive poorly; my other external HDDs do not claim to be durable or anti-shock like this drive, but they are still working fine after years of use.

I filed an RMA request ([...]) and shipped it off for around $10.
After around 1 week Transcend shipped me a brand new StoreJet 25M2 still in its retail packaging.

If I was rating Transcend's RMA service, I would give them 4 stars.
They would have to refund the cost of shipping to get 5 stars. :)
