The not so good, and really not a deal breaker whatsoever because where the device over-delivers...the "included" software leaves much to be desired given the fact that they include in the sales pitch "Includes Transcend Elite backup and security software". No included software disc, no instructions, not preloaded on the device to install from to your PC or laptop. The drive is pre-formatted to FAT32 disc partitioning which is useless by today's standards, which I found out after transferring a big chunk of data, that it needed to be reformatted to NTSF. Not the end of the world but leaves you with a little buyers remorse that this software...that is supposed to provide security encryption, automatically perform incremental backups of new or modified data as well as recover mistakenly deleted files falls way short in my opinion.
You have to register your device on a website which entitles you to down load the Transcend Elite.exe file. You have to launch the executable everytime you want to use one of it's so-called tools. Not intuitive at all and a significant amount of time is needed for the learning curve. And lastly, is the inclusion of a couple of dangerous "auto-formatting" executables where it is entirely possible to wipe out your own local drive or the Storejet external drive if you are not careful or have limited knowledge of how hard drives work.
Having gotten all that off my chest...would I recommend to a friend, family, colleague? Yes, I most certainly would as the device performs flawlessly and if connected w/ USB 3.0 hardware....SUPER FAST!!!
I got this drive and it worked fine up until now. After a year and five months the drive has developed what seems to be bad sectors and sections of the disk became unreadable and unwritable. I managed to get most of the data off the drive, but not all, losing some data that sadly was not backed up.
I originally got this drive because it came with a 3 year warranty while other drives in the same price category only come with 2 year warranty.
I assumed that if an extra year was given meant the maker probably trusted its product not to fail in the warranty lifespan. Well... I was wrong and it is only my fault that the data I lost was not backed up somewhere else. Today those type of drives must be bought in pairs... one for use and the other for an offline backup of the first drive.
I'm sure that a Seagate or a WD drive could fail in the same way (or worse), so it is up to everybody to decide if getting a drive with 5 years warranty means anything in regard to product quality or if the extra costs should go to doubling the backup storage.
BTW, this $!%) hard drive died in less than 8 months, SO:
DO YOURSELF A >>BIG<< FAVOR __ BUY ELSEWHERE
The Transcend 3TB drive has a mind of its own. I have no idea when it will decide to shut down or power up needlessly. A bright blue light blinks even when nothing is being transferred. It's crazy.
At one point, I picked up to drive because it was not functioning, and it came alive. Does it have a motion switch? Does one need to slap it to wake it up?
No. The drive needs an OFF-ON switch, and I cannot recommend it.
