I've been a big fan of PF since their excellent 2005 release Seven Seals after which I obtained almost all their back catalogue, and have looked forward to each subsequent new album release. 2007's New Religion was brilliant, but 16.6 from 2009 didn't really do much for me and whilst vocalist Ralph Scheepers' self titled solo album from last year was an ok album, it by no means reached the heights of earlier PF albums either. So I was hopeful of a return to form with this album and thankfully it is, but I took a bit of convincing.

PF don't reinvent the wheel and have often been labelled Judas Priest clones, but whilst musically and vocally there are some similarities I just hear a distinctly Primal Fear sound when I listen to them, and that sound comes through on Unbreakable in full force with a blast of pure traditional heavy metal of high quality, the likes of which made me a fan of this band in the first place.

The more recent PF albums have been a bit more experimental, incorporating an increasingly more symphonic element into their music on each album, but on Unbreakable that symphonic element is less to the fore. With this album the symphonic element still there to a degree in some songs, but generally we have a more stripped back metal sound that is more in line with the band's pre 2005 albums.

Commencing with a short intro that builds the atmosphere nicely, the album then takes off in full force with the first song Strike, a foot to the floor power metaller, the likes of which have been a staple of PF over the years. A great choice to kick off with a bang, and it is followed by an equally as powerful song in Give `Em Hell. The choice of single Bad Guys Wear Black is next and lyrically this one does have a fair dose of metal cliché & cheese with it, but I say "get over it", it's a great song nonetheless and its infectiousness just can't be denied. From then we get more of the same fists full of metal, but sometimes the punches come faster than others, and some have more knock out power than others.

For me the album peaks in the middle and falls away a bit in the latter half which is why the album didn't really resonate with me to begin with, and why I don't think it is as good as either Seven Seals or New Religion. But the last few songs are not bad by any means, they just don't hit the same heights as earlier songs. But when the band is in fine form and delivering this kind of quality in terms of both music and production, no true metal fan can really have cause for too much complaint. Primal Fear are back with another high quality album and again prove why they are not only consistent, but a real metal force to be reckoned with.

There's one more point that must be made before I finish here, and that is that Scheepers is again on fire on this album and proves yet again what a fantastic voice he has, and that he must surely be ranked right up there with the best metal vocalists around at the moment.

Preferred Tracks:
Where Angels Die (undoubtedly Magnus Karlsson is the prime writer of this one, it's got his sound & style all over it and is a definite candidate for my personal top 10 metal songs of the year).
Metal Nation (this metal anthem is another likely contender and dig Matt Sinner's short bass solo before the guitar solo kicks in... "ahhh").
Unbreakable Pt.2 (this song-de-force makes up the third highlight song in a row and concludes the albums peak in the middle).
Then there's the already mentioned Strike, Give `Em Hell, & Bad Guys Wear Black.
The bonus track Night Of The Jumps should be on the album proper, it's a good mid paced song that brings a welcome change to the full throttle ones.
