For fans of the series, you still get your new version of Nate's Theme, and this is probably the best version of it yet. However, this score brings out the most emotion and excitement out of all of the scores in the series. Every single track is great, and the change from a slower pace to a faster pace in many tracks is simply awesome. The first disc consists of the main score from the game, mostly the single player tracks. The first disc runs 72 minutes and 18 seconds, which is pretty lengthy on its own. On top of this though, the CD version of Uncharted 3's soundtrack offers a bonus disc with eighteen additional tracks. Some of these are from the singleplayer, but many are bonus tracks featured in the game or they are Powerplay tracks in multiplayer. If these don't interest you much, you don't necessarily need to buy this CD, you can just get a digital version, however, this adds a whopping extra 48 minutes and 11 seconds to the soundtrack, making the entire package run at two hours and twenty nine seconds.
The CD is also a limited edition CD (if you read on the back of the case, it is one of 3000 units) so Uncharted fans will definitely want to check this out. The score is incredible, without going into too much detail, and it not only compliments the action in the already amazing game, but listening to it by itself also adds a whole other dimension to the score, which makes it even more amazing. If you are an Uncharted fan, don't hesitate to pick this up.
The music is full of so many textures that it's impossible to know where to begin. The score is also mammoth in size and scope. La-La Land Records teams up with Sony to bring us an amazing 2-Disc set filled with over 2 hours of some of the most fun I've had listening to a score. Edmonson hits the ground running and every piece of music is telling the story while being completely infused with character and setting. This is a prime example of how a score should function. The use of ethnic instrumentation and additional music from Azam Ali and Clint Bajakain help sell the setting. The action cues are in another realm and not only do they propel the story to new heights, they make for a fantastic solo listen. I wish I were 9-years old discovering film scores for the first time again with this music. This is the kind of music that could potentially define a childhood and craft a future film score fan or filmmaker like myself. This is what adventure is all about and this is why adventure scores exist. Greg Edmonson has crafted a score that fuels our imagination and our love for the bold and exotic.
If you aren't playing Uncharted 3 then stop reading this and go do so. If you haven't listened to the score yet then snatch up this release as it's limited to 3,000 copies and will be gone soon. Uncharted 3 encompases everything Edmonson has done musically in the past 2 games except this time the exectution and structure are perfect. This is a masterpiece of video game scoring and one of the best adventure scores you will hear be it game or film. If Sony doesn't hire Greg Edmonson to do the film adaptation then I probably will not even see it. You can't have Uncharted without Greg's music; it makes it everything that it is.
Disc 2 is exclusive to this version and contains not only additional tracks from the singleplayer story, but also remixes of some of the tracks as they're used for multiplayer powerplays. I do miss the exclusive remix track that Uncharted 1 and 2's respective soundtracks had, but since this one basically has three remix tracks, I can't really complain.
I was a bit dismayed to learn that this is a limited run--even though I now own one of the 3,000 copies, I wish the tracks on the second disc would at least be made available to people who buy the mp3 album. For such an anticipated and publicized game, limiting the number of complete soundtracks seems like an odd decision.
Anyway, if you're a fan of Uncharted or even just soundtracks in general, I'd easily recommend this one.
There isn't much else for me to say besides that, i'm a constant collector of music soundtracks from movies and games alike, but the music for Uncharted is some of the best i've ever heard, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is a must-own for anyone who loves instrumental music, or music from games and movies. As T.E. Lawrence said, and Nathan Drake quotes in the game, "All men dream, but not equally..."
Greg Edmonson is the man behind the award winning game soundtrack Uncharted 2:Among Thieves.
In Uncharted 3 he has done it again, and I think everyone who will listen to it will agree with me.
My Personal recommendations:
Atlantis of the Sands
Small Beginnings - My favorite
The Settlement - My second favorite
The Rub' al Khali
Dreamers of the Day
I really wanna write them all :)
