"[Katie's] raw, young voice describing the sordid situations she finds herself in-seeks out, really-is authentic teenage girl. . . . Intensely self-aware, angry, alienated and filled with teenage narcissism and pain. . . . When the ending kicks in with a twist . . . it forces you to realize you lost yourself in the plot and character and read for pleasure. This makes you complicit in the consequences, turns you into a reader, yes, but also into one of Katie's voyeurs." -"Los Angeles Times "
"Allison Burnett has magically brewed an addictive elixir. Blogging, self-absorption, and bad behavior slowly build into a touching and deeply moving narrative, yet Burnett chooses to serve this concoction unadorned, a shot of vodka-all the better to feel the ending's burn. If you've ever been tempted to dismiss the next generation, "read this book."" --Amanda Boyden, author of "Pretty Little Dirty "and "Babylon Rolling"
"Imagine an 18-year-old Lolita, updated to the 21st century, blogging her own provocative adventures. By turns charming and crude, disturbingly reckless and achingly tender, "Undiscovered Gyrl" seduces you into her downy arms, locks her long legs around your waist and doesn't let go. Shot through with teenage yearning for 'true love, ' each page vibrates with the quicksilver spirit of youth. As we follow the narrator on her ever-darkening journey, questions arise about voyeurism and identity in an age of cyber-anonymity. Allison Burnett's masterful page-turner lingers long after the last page." --Rachel Resnick, author of "Love Junkie"

Descripción del producto

Beautiful, wild, funny, and lost, Katie Kampenfelt is taking a year off before college to find her passion. Ambitious in her own way, Katie intends to do more than just smoke weed with her boyfriend, Rory, and work at the bookstore. She plans to seduce Dan, a thirty-two-year-old film professor.

Katie chronicles her adventures in an anonymous blog, telling strangers her innermost desires, shames, and thrills. But when Dan stops taking her calls, when her alcoholic father suffers a terrible fall, and when she finds herself drawn into a dangerous new relationship, Katie's fearless narrative begins to crack, and dark pieces of her past emerge.

Sexually frank, often heartbreaking, and bursting with devilish humor, Undiscovered Gyrl is an extraordinarily accomplished novel of identity, voyeurism, and deceit.

I'm not going to describe to much of the book itself because others have done that far better than I could. I saw the movie trailer with Brit Robertson - wanted to see the movie - but always like to read the book first. So I went directly to my Kindle and purchased it based solely on the trailer. I was immediately fascinated and drawn-in by this story written as the diary of a young girl.... and from the movie trailer, I had the impression that it was a fictionalized autobiography from the author's own childhood. I read about a third of the book and enjoyed it so much... the dry humor... writing style, etc that when I was on Amazon looking for another product, I searched books to find out what else the author had written. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the author is a MAN... first male Allison I've known ha!ha! I totally had to readjust my mind to the character of Katie. After a little time and a few deep breaths, I picked up the book again and literally read it straight through. Katie is so relatable as a young teen struggling with her identity and her future. The book is very well written - excellent author!!
(Warning...very minor spoiler)The one other thing I will address in this review is the ending... Katie does give us an indication several times, but when it comes, it's like a full on body blow - it's so unexpected that it hits hard. This is one of the elements that makes a book stand out. There are a few reviews that complain about feeling "ripped off" by the surprise ending. Admittedly it was unexpected, but for me, I don't think I'd enjoy reading as much as I do if every situation were predictable! I reiterate... MUST READ!!

My peers that have either read this book and/or seen its film, Ask Me Anything (2014), often say that the end of the story frustrates them because [SPOILER, SORT OF] it ends on a cliff hanger. But the ending is my favorite part of this book. [SPOILER, DEFINITELY] Katie has created this online personality for herself, and the book is a series of her blog posts about her semi-eccentric life. However, the reader later finds out that she may or may not have embellished her life online. People get so obsessed with the tiny details of Katie's story, wondering what she embellished and what happened to her after she disappears. But that's not what I got out of this book. This book helped me to realize that you can be whatever you want in this life, and you can have as many breakdowns as needed, but one day you can just pack it all up and disappear and the character you created for yourself doesn't need to exist anymore. Even though Katie's life might have seemed crazy, she was just another messed up kid like the rest of us who wanted an escape from it all, one way or another. I think it's important for teenagers to learn this lesson because everything at this age seems like the end of the world. The things that Katie went though are things a surprising number of teenagers also experience. But these things don't have to be the end of the world. Maybe I'm reading too much into this book, but it has been interesting to try and figure out why the author left it on a cliffhanger. Usually, I am allergic to cliffhangers; I can't even watch a show on Netflix unless I know it had a conclusive ending. But there is beauty in Katie's mystery.

[end spoilers]

To anyone considering buying this book... buy it, read it, watch the movie (which is currently streaming on Netflix), reread it/rewatch it until you get some meaning out of it. There is more to it than meets the eye. Even if I have totally misinterpreted the author's intentions behind this book, thank you Allison Burnett for writing it. It has made me think in new ways and has thoroughly entertained me.

This book is thrilling to say the least. The main character is so smart, yet so stupid at the same time. It's a heartbreaking tale that also makes you laugh. And of course a twist at the end that will stay with you and maybe even drive you crazy.
