One of the best Marx Brothers films, with Groucho, Chico and Harpo all on top form. Plenty of humour is also provided by Marx Brothers regular Margaret Dumont as the long suffering wealthy Opera patron Mrs Claypool and Sig Ruman as pompous Opera company director Herman Gottlieb.

Aspiring singer Ricardo Baroni is mistakenly signed up by Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho), believing him to be the prestigious tenor Lasspari. Ricardo and the Opera's leading lady Rosa have fallen for one another, but although Ricardo's voice is good, he falls short to Lasspari's celebrity reputation. Although Rosa and the obnoxious Lasspari are singing opposite one another, the Marx Brothers intervene to get Ricardo a leading role.

Groucho, Chico and Harpo cause mischief aboard ship, as they make their way to New York for the Opera's opening night, it's an opening night to remember, but not necessarily for the Opera singing. Full of slapstick and jokes, the film doesn't take itself seriously and it shouldn't be missed!

A much-loved classic which has it's flaws but still has a charm and humour all its own. It's not as anarchic as their earlier films but still has that undercurrent of three (no longer four) top flight comedy performers straining at the leash.

The extras are particularly worth having, particularly the itnterviews with Kitty Carlisle; yes, that is her voice singing in the film!

I have always loved this comedy. It has never failed to amuse me. The black and white print is excellent. Kitty Carlisle and Alan Jones are terrific and The Marx brothers are..... well ....The Marx Brothers. Comedy genius.

As ever, the Marx Brothers find themselves bringing insanity to another standard plot. However, this time the studio has given them music and dance numbers and a bigger budget. Some of the earlier spontaneity is lacking (Animal Crackers and Horse Feathers seem much more like off-shoots of the stage act) but the basic characters are still there with Margaret Dumont assisting as ever in the role of stooge (and much under-rated in the role). There are plenty of laughs along the way and whether you like Groucho's quipping, Chico's mangling of language or Harpo's physical comedy or any combination of them then there is something for you (and if you don't, why are you watching a Marx Brothers film?). Personally, I don't think it's their best, but it is still way above most comedy of the time ... and much of what has followed.

Brilliant. One of the Marx Brothers best. It has in it, one of the greatest (in my view) scenes and lines ever....when they are looking over and tearing sections out of the contract, "insanity clause".
