I bought this mainly as a lark, to test out biometrics on a home system before looking at something more serious at work. The shoddy sensor and install instructions have convinced me to look elsewhere for my enterprise needs. Even after I drilled down in their site to the actual driver page (well hidden), I had to try 6-7 different drivers for my win7 install, as the win7 driver did not initially work. These all failed. Eventually, I had to actually go to their forums, search recent posts for install issues, and then find a link of the actual driver I needed. Just terrible.

Even after I found the right driver, I had to manually select and force the driver, as it would not install even with the right folder selected. Its important that the driver picks up as actiontec in device manager. If it selects as anything else, your device will not work.

The device picked up? Well great. The software will finally give you the option to add your fingerprints in. Without the sensor it will not even give you the option, or even give you a prompt to install a sensor. It does have a tiny video of how to record your fingerprints, bu no actual way to do it.This was very unclear off the bat which was frustrating, to say the least.

So now the fingerprint scanner is there, so lets go. You attempt to scan a finger. Guess what? It will fail. A lot. I had it fail 15 times or so before I could get one print in. The scanning software has what appears to be a timer. If you fail to get enough accurate scans of your fingerprint in under this time (maybe 10 seconds) you have to click out, and restart all over, often times reentering the password the print is supposed to stand in for. Powerfully annoying.

Finally, finally, I have a print. I've set up my system with a windows password, Ive enable biometrics in windows settings, and Ive linked my print to the password. Lets go. I log out, and am given the option to login with my print. Awesome. So I do so. Fail. Fail. Fail. Not once, in at least 20 attempts was my fingerprint actually detected.

Complete waste of time and money.

1.0 de un máximo de 5 estrellas You'll slash your wrists before you get this thing to work! 6 de agosto de 2012
Por Pat Rowe - Publicado en
It's so cute and tiny and the Deal site that promoted it on sale, quoted one tiny, positive review.

What's NOT so tiny is the frustration you'll go through trying to get this half-baked software and driver to ever work! I've tried to get it going on a Windows 7 X64 laptop and desktop and boy, Eikon (the manufacturer) sure doesn't care what the customer has to go through to use its products!

Their website is utterly confusing: first, YOU have to sort out the various models of readers and find the Mini. Then YOU have to figure out which of 4 (four!) different drivers to download and use. Even the Driver isn't user-friendly. YOU have to sort through three different folders and try launching different files until you stumble upon "WBFminNOSAx64.msi". But you already knew that would be the name, didn't you?

No, no obvious "installer" or "setup" of other such clue. And after you install it, you can only even FIND the program (in order to enroll your fingerprints) in some obscure file ONLY ACCESSIBLE THROUGH A WINDOWS SEARCHBOX! I've tried some half-baked products before, but that's a new twist.

Great. So now I finally have the "biometric devices" window open. Where's the "Manage Your Fingerprint Data" option that I'm supposed to see? Oh, really, it's not there after all? So there's no way to enroll my prints? For some reason, I'm not surprised.

I'm quite computer literate - built most of the PC's I've used - and I can't get this little wonder to work. But maybe you'll have better luck. Just put away all the razor blades before you start...

The last two laptops I've owned had fingerprint readers, so when my new laptop arrived and I noticed it didn't have a fingerprint reader anywhere, I started looking around for the small, desk style readers and I intended to glue it to the back of the monitor.

Never did I dream I would find something so small! If this is your first fingerprint reader, it might take some getting used to. That's no fault of the product itself; the nature of any fingerprint scanner is that you need to be able to scan your finger roughly in the same way every time, otherwise the print will not match.

The software that comes with this scans your finger a few times when you enroll a finger, so it does account for some error. The guy who gave this a 1 star bad review probably already had drunk his last six pack while using this...

While this does come with its own software, I believe windows 8 can detect and use most fingerprint scanners out of the box without third party drivers. Haven't tested this particular unit, but I've had another USB fingerprint scanner just work without any drivers in the windows 8 developer preview.

Moreover, other fingerprint reader 3rd party software could work with this too. Once again, not tested with this unit, but I chances are good (my other unit is made by the same company). You're not married to the software this comes with, is my point, although the authentic software has come a LONG way in the last three years, and this comes with their 'premium suite', which I'm extremely happy with. Firefox is supported, which is something that NO ONE in the fingerprint scanning industry has supported since firefox 3.6.

The unit itself is small, unobtrusive, and actually more accurate than any of my other sensors. It does stick out of the laptop about half an inch, but that really isn't a problem, just don't walk through a doorway with your laptop a half inch away from the frame.

Can't beat the price, either.

I have owned a laptop with a similar product embedded into the platform, although troublesome sometimes, a "nice" accessory. So I/we decided to get a couple more devices. This device, the Upek EB-P-1-WN-EKM-0502 would accompany our older/aging laptop. A Upek EIKONBOX-S-1-WN-EKS-0500 for our desktop(returned after less that 24 hours due to "fussy/not working" operation)
The Upek EB-P-1-WN-EKM-0502, installed and within a couple of finger swipes was up and running and has not disappointed us once...A great product..
